Addictive Drinking

On Wednesday of last week, I had (2) 25 oz IPAS after work, Thursday still felt great and did the same, Friday I went to happy hour, still feeling chipper and upbeat. I had a few Buds, and then stopped to get some beer and a found a bottle of vodka 100 proof on clearance. I bought that and had about half of that on Friday night and the other half on Saturday. At this point I started to feel somewhat crappy. I had a tennis match and didnt feel like playing, but had to. After the match, I went to my happy IPA bar and had (3) big beers, then went home and had some more. I also took a diphenhydrimine to help me sleep. I knew on Monday I would not be going to work so I got up around 4 am and had another 25oz beer and 1 regular, took another pill to help me sleep. On MOnday, I had 3 more IPAS and 1 glass of wine. I didn't sleep at all that night. I had racing thoughts etc all night long. Couldnt get comfortable, and feel like hell today....thoughts?

I have no idea what an IPAS is, but what you described is heavy drinking and you are compounding that by taking pills on top of it, presumably a sleep aid.

What do you think your Dr would think of this?

I agree with Suki.
Are you trying to quit drinking?

Thanks everyone for their responses. I am struggling with if this drinking is problematic.

Yes, it is problematic; or did you not just say that you feel like hell and can't sleep.

I didn't notice a response to my question "What do you think your Dr would think of this? "

Then again, instead of relying on your GUESS of what your Dr's thoughts are, why don't you fully disclose your drinking and med intake with him/her and get a medical opinion? That is something none of us here can give you anyway.

Hey Gillz, sorry at work and trying to do this discretely. I have made my DR aware of how much I have been drinking and my therapist as well. My therapist does not think I am an alcoholic and that my body is not as young as it used to be. I have had trouble sleeping on and off again for years so its not uncommon for me to be up like that. I didnt drink that much yesterday to warrant how crappy I felt today. I dont want to "SHOULD" all over myself but I shouldnt have drank all that vodka over the weekend. I am trying to moderate. I shouldnt be missing work either. I had a hell week lined up and I avoided it.

Alcohol is affecting your life obviously, cut down or cut it out completely. I don't know what else to say i'm afraid, apart from hope you get it resolved in some way for you!

It sounds like you can't stop once you start, and though you can have a couple the first day, you want to feel again that way the second day, the only thing is it takes more, then you get real screwed up and have to take sleeping pills. I go through the same thing. I can have a few or one on wednesday then thursday I gradually get some more, then I just want to be drunk the whole weekend.

If you think your drinking is a problem, then it is. You must have some nagging concerns since you've posted your question in a recovery forum.

We can't tell you nor can your therapist (IMHO)... only you can say. There are some good reasons why you should be asking though... missed work, drinking to make your hangover go away, drinking more than you wanted to...

God, I don't miss that diphenhydramine and alcohol combination!! Of all the gifts I enjoy most in my early sobriety (6 months) it is that I sleep like a baby.... I do miss those IPAs...

Love your avatar!

Mark

Sounds to me like a slippery slope. No one here will tell you that you need to quit. Only you can make that decision. It is a lot of drinking though.

Ya don't need a therapist to give you an answer. I don't know you, but I recall taking one of these years ago and shading my answers. If you are ruthlessly honest about your responses, will give you a better evaluation than any of us can provide. BTW, there are other, similar alcoholism self-evaluations out there.

Yes, absolutely.. Drinking 6 days straight is a problem. As is waking up at 4am to drink... 100 proof vodka bottle gone in 2 days, ouch..

You are the only one who can ultimately decide if you are an alcoholic. I wouldn't rely on other people's opinions....even a therapist. Therapists can be off the mark.

And what about your Dr? What does she/he think?
