My dog passed last night- struggling big time
my 13 yr old golden retriever died last night and its killing me- we were really close. my chest hurts, and all i want to do is kill the hurt in me with alcohol. have been really working on recovery hard, but this is the worst feeling i have ever had. just sharing- not that this is anything positive, but i just needed to vent...

I'm sorry for your loss dub, I know how hard it is to lose a pet...
All drinking will do is make you feel worse. Stay near SR today and take it easy on yourself. It is natural to grieve over the loss of a beloved pet; allow youself to do so.
I'm certain that your dog would not want for you to drink.

Sorry for your lost, never easy to see our K-9 pals pass away. Just last week I had to take my black lab in and have put to sleep. And I'm not afraid to admit when I got back to my car it look like the hoover dam exploded.
But no mater how bad it hurts DON'T EVEN DARE grab that bottle, it will only make the pain worse. I'm sure your Golden would like to see you sober rather then drunk.

Oh I'm so sorry. I went thru this in Sept w/ my 16 year old pug. I felt like I would never be happy again. All I did was cry - I couldn't stop. Nothing will stop the pain -not even drinking, which might make it worse - except feeling it. Sucks, I know. So have a good cry and feel crappy and remember what a great life you gave each other.
Again, I'm so sorry.
It's been a few months and I just got another dog from rescue. I never thought I'd be able to do that. And this one's a PITA, and I adore him. You might be suprised how much you can love and how much you'll be willing to feel pain to be able to love.

hey there my friend, i am a huge dog lover, and had had a dog, or dogs in my life always, i have had working dogs all my life, and i completly understand how attached you become to our furry freinds, they are incredibly powerful and hugely fullfilling parts of you, like a child, of that there is no question how hurtful it is losing your baby, in very sorry for your lose, i can imagine how you must be feeling, but, focus on all the joy your baby bought into your life and cherish the love you both shared for each other. dogs cn sense all your emotions, please dont let him/her down by slipping up. time will ease the pain, though it will never disapear, and maybe in the not to distant future you might consider filling that gap with a new baby to brighten your life once more. stay strong and honour his/her memory the right way..... sober.

I have a dog that I love so much and it would kill me to lose him. Someday I will. I am so sorry for your loss.
When I was drinking my dog was one reason I quit. I became convinced that he didn't love me and that he hated me for what I was doing (project much? lol). I also couldn't connect with him. I'd pet him but then be like ugh go away! (this closely mirrors my relationship with people as well, I know you're shocked)
This is how I think about it: Your dog deserves your full unmitigated grief, because he gave you his full love. If you drink then you are not helping yourself not feel, you are cheating your dog out of a owner that is fully present for him, even if it's in his death.
Take care of yourself.

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Having to put my dog down a couple of years ago tore me up worse than losing my grandparents. I'm tearing up just thinking about it. I spent a few days visiting dogs at the local animal shelter. When I was ready, I took one home.
I understand how you feel. It's not fair that their lifespan is so short. I read a story somewhere about a young boy who went with his dad to put their dog to sleep. The vet talked to him about the good life they'd given their dog and how unfair it was that they don't live very long. The kid then told the vet and his dad that he knew why dogs' lives are so short. Because for people it takes us quite a while to learn how to love and get along, but a dog is born knowing how to love and give his all. Smart kid.
Here are some beautiful poems about dogs. Poems In Praise of Dogs
I hope that someday you can give another loving dog the good life you gave Max. And I think that to do so would honor Max and the love you had for each other.
