Many Roads, One Journey: Moving beyond the Twelve Steps

Many Roads, One Journey: Moving beyond the Twelve Steps
by Charlotte S. Kasl

Does anyone have any opinions on this book? I was always told the AA is the only way. I didn't even know you were allowed to say anything against aa without getting jumped and beaten with the blue book.

AA is not the only way.

If you are going to talk bad about AA it doesn't make sense to do it in an AA meeting, or in a 12 step forum, unless you just like pissing people off. I prefer not to bash anyone's chosen form of recovery program because that does not help anyone get or stay sober.

The 12 step forum is for those that practice a 12 step program, such as AA. If you don't think AA is for you, don't hang out or post there. You can always post in the newcomer foruma, or there is the "general" alcoholism forum here as well as the secular forum for those that prefer a non-religious approach.

Check out the stickies for the non-AA recovery methods.

Hello Pinkclouded - You will find lots of alternatives to AA discussed here. There are several threads under Newcomers from the past month or so about alternatives - look back and you will find them.

Also suggest checking out the Secular Recovery thread - lots of good info there.

I have looked at this book Many Roads, One Journey.. I agree with the principle but the writer did not grab me. I really like Sober for Good by Ann Fletcher, specifically about alcoholic recovery.. Personally I also got a lot from Changing for Good about changing many types of destructive habits - it has been core for me in my move away from alcohol.

Also, as dgillz says, the Alcoholism threads are great.

I also agree that you will find lots of acceptance of multiple paths here without any bashing of any particular path (including AA).

Good luck and welcome to SR!

Oh I'm sorry- I didn't mean to bash anyone. I was simply amazed that there were other ways.

Pinkclouded,

No problems. Your original post sounded like you had an axe to grind. My apologies, I should not have jumped to that conclusion.

As I said there are many here who choose not to use AA, and you are more than welcome here.

No, I have not read the book

Yes, I do use AA with joy

No, AA is not for everyone.

....If you need more assistance with sobriety
than just the book...
here is a list from our Alcoholism Forum
for you to explore

http://www.soberrecovery.com/forums/...-programs.html

Hope you find your answers...Sobriety is sooo worthwhile...

You can have reasons, or you can have results, but you can't have both.

AA was not for me, but I'm very interested in exploring SMART Recovery, Women for Sobriety, and Celebrate Recovery. And I'm sure there are others. AA seems to have the largest "market share" but there are lots of options out there.

I personally use a lot of resources, AA is one of them however as I have posted at least for me I use a host of resources that come at this addiction in different ways, I take what works for me and apply it to my life. I tend to lean more towards the RR approach and AVRT, having said that there are many things I get from AA as well that I use daily.
