how not to drink alcohol - social work party

Went to work party, at 2pm, for boss leaving, obviously at a leaving party there are the usual bottles of cava!

Before my boss came in i made the comment that i don't drink, a pre-emptive stike! This was met with the usual 'what never'...then finally the one i was waiting for 'why don't you drink?'. I have told a couple of work colleagues why and they smiled and i answered 'well think about it for a second and the answer is pretty obvious'...got a laugh from most. Then silence so i followed on saying obviously i had got to drinking too much and thought it was better to stop altogther. Then, of all people, HR manager (i hate HR with a passion anyway) says 'so you're not like an alcoholic then, going to that thing...AA?'...so...I said 'ehhhhh, well, let's see how it goes' and laughed!

Anyways boss comes in so cava is poured, the lady sitting next to me is 3 years sober and introduced me to AA (went to my first meeting last week). Now i'm sure that i am not going to drink so when the cup is placed in front of me and poured, even to someone saying 'don't give cliff any!', i just say 'ok ill raise it for the toast' (oh i made sure i bought a diet coke before the party and was supping on that too) then the lady who goes to AA says 'ok sip for a toast!'. So my initial reaction is to reach over and take the cup off of her, i know i'm not going to drink it but what about her? I'm glad i didn't and we both raised the cup to thorat level and then put it down on the toast!

An hour or so later we disperse and blow me one of the people that i had explained to earlier that i had been drinking too much and stopped altogether and i felt happier etc. said to me as she picked up the glass 'aren't you going to finish this off' lol

I said 'nope i saved it for you' with a wink.

Just wanted to share this little victory and i feel good about it, im not going to go to and start hanging out in places with alcohol again but feel pleased that i did not have any urge to drink when at, what could be an awkward situation, one of these funny occasions that DO crop up if you leave the house, go to work etc.

BTW i did not want the drink, and then afterwards over a coffee by myself i just analysed why 5 months ago i would have taken it as i would have felt awkward even knowing the damage it does to me as an alcoholic, and i can on y put it down to self delusion and that only now do i truly know and believe that one drink will lead to many will lead to the casino will lead to minimum 2 weeks solid depression and will put me back on day one. Now i believe that and there is no more delusion it's a pretty obvious choice to make for anyone who is not totally insane. I guess as someone said last week it seems that the obsession has gone, but i know i need to work on this for the rest of my life to ensure it stays gone and i can live sober.

Thanks for letting me share SR:ghug

Good for you. If I remember correctly, and maybe I don't, you just stopped taking antabuse and if that is the case a double congrats for you.
It is amazing that work functions still include alcohol but I guess olf traditions die hard.
