Question Hi Everyone - New to all this, questions

Hi gang

I have been struggling with alcoholism for about 5 years now but decided about a year ago to do something about it. I went to a therapist who helped me greatly but didnt follow up with a support group. I recently lost my job due to layoffs and that brought me right back to my old friend, the bottle.

Tomorrow I am going to see my General Practitioner for a physical and tell him I need help with this. I am scared. I admitted to him I drank to much but, I have been on like a 2 week binge now and withdrawal is killing me to the point where I just drink now to stop that feeling.

What should I expect after I talk to him? Are there specific questions I should ask him? Any of your experience would be helpful.

Thanks All for reading

S

Hi Stew and welcome to SR.

I don't have a lot of advice to you, other than try to keep it to a dull roar tonight,
and tomorrow be totally honest with your Doctor about your alcohol intake.

I'm sure others will be along shortly with more advice.

Keep reading SR and posting here, it has helped many people,
and once again, welcome to the club!

Good luck!

Welcome Stew.
I don't have much advice just support because the mental in the long run is much tougher than the physical.
It is good that you are seeing your doctor and hopefully he will have experience in treating drinkers. The only advice I have is to be completely honest with him as to the amount you are drinking and the frequency of it for him to best help you.
Since you have decided to quit this shouldn't be a problem. I know I lied to my doctor about this for years and I am sure others will say the same.
After the physical has been taken care of you are certainly going to need support and this forum will provide you that if you wish to take it. Good luck.

I have no advice on alcohol and withdrawl. I am an addict. Never really drank.
Its really good that you are going to see your DR. And even better that you are going to address this issue with your Dr's help. Just be open and honest. I am sure he will do everything possible to ensure a safe detox.
Glad you are here.
Keep posting and good luck.

Welcome....I think it's wise to talk honestly about your drinking
tomorrow. Then you go with what the two of you decide.

I did not do re hab or a de tox center.
It might not be necessary for you either.

Here is a link about withdrawals

Please note that not every person had the same experiences.

Sorry to know of your job situation...it's everywhere

Please come back and let us know how you are doing.

Just like everyone else, I say just be as honest and open with your doc as you can be. I found mine to be a very valuable source of support.

Welcome to SR.
