I once went to an AA meeting, and one of the people there said that when we thought about taking a drink, we should ask ourselves:
Am I hungry?
Am I thirsty?
Am I tired?
Am I lonely?
The hard part is remembering that after the alcohol wears off, the other thing will still be there, waiting for us to deal with it. Our body will still be there, with its needs. Our emotions will still be there, screaming at us.
