Need advice....

I have been drinking and smoking cigarretts for most of my life now (42 yrs old). I want to quit smoking as much as drinking.... it consumes my time and my health, although relatively good somehow... has to be suffering. Today is day 2 without a drink and have a 1/2 pack of cigs here & want to quit after I'm done with them but don't know how wise a thing it would be to do both at the same time. My body feels crappy anyways from detoxing and just think maybe I should do them together so I can really start changing my life for the good.

Does anyone have experience with quitting everything altogether, esp cigs with the alcohol????

Thanks SR!
Nicki

Concentrate on quitting the alcohol for now would be my suggestion.

I quit both but not at the same time.

I agree with Tommy. More than 1 thing at a time might be a little too much to bite off at one time. You can do it this time, one day at a time.

It's been recommended to me to try one thing at a time, otherwise you may relapse on both. Try the alcohol first - I gave myself until day 60 sober to quit, a friend of mine made her goal to quit smoking after 1 yr sobriety. Don't try to do too much at once - babysteps!

Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette,.... but don't drink!!

Quit later, when you're more confident in your sobriety!!

Yea..I agree. One thing at a time.
I was going to do the same thing and it was stressing me out too much. So I kept the smokes and quit the drugs for now.
Take it easy. And start with the alcohol first.
Glad to see you back.

I quit both at the same time - but I only really smoked when I drank anyway.
They both suck, but pick your battles - one thing at a time

I'd quit the alcohol first, then after some solid sobriety quit smoking. One thing at a time, take it easy on yourself. Baby steps.:ghug3

Hi, Im on day six after quitting alcohol and cannabis. I really want to stop smoking cigarettes as well but have decided not try just now, so I'm allowing myself to smoke as much cigarettes as I want. Think its best to concentrate on the alcohol just now and not to try to do too much

I concur. If I might suggest one thing though, it would be to avoid using a cigarette as a means of coping with an alcohol craving. I did that at first and something always felt weird about it. I think maybe that lets that "alcoholic brain" think, "well, at least I still have some power over this guy. Pretty soon it'll be me instead of that cigarette again."

Others might wish to contradict on that point.

I quit smoking 2 1/2 years ago (smoked for 17 years) while I was still drinking. I quit smoking pot 5 months ago. I've been trying to quit drinking seriously since 12/27/2007. In 2008 I was on and off sober for about a total of six months. I'm now 16 days free of alcohol on my latest attempt after drinking for the past three months. One thing at a time.
