I'm a newbie.
Hello everyone,
Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm an adult child of an alcoholic. My dad has been sober for 9 years now, but even though I'm grown up, out of my parents' house and married, I still have nightmares and violent flashbacks to my childhood that have gotten worse recently. I'm trying to figure out ways to deal with the past and move on, but haven't come to any concrete conclusions.
I was in counseling a lot in college, but after 3 failed tries with different counselors and psychiatrists I decided to stop going that route. I'm glad to find a forum where people are trying to figure out all of this stuff.
Thanks for reading.

Welcome Iamica!
As Angelina said, you may want to check out ACOA!!!
I grew up in an alcoholic and severely dysfunctional environment too that took years to finally come to some semblance of peace with. I would venture to guess many of the guys and gals who post here also have tainted childhood pasts....
It's good to learn that you have sought help. No, YOU have not failed with these "therapists"... maybe they just weren't right for you at the time and/or you weren't ready to open up completely???... Either way, you have a lot of support here and other sites (ACOA) where you can let it all hang out. Keep posting and be good to YOU.
Hugs xoxo

Hi Iamca,
Welcome,
I think when we grow up in dysfunctional families, we don't learn how to express our emotions and how to function properly in life. It's really hard to come to terms with events from childhood, but I encourage you to keep searching for answers.
