When does sobriety date start?

If I made 1 mistake during my sobriety is the sobriety date from the time I decided to quit and went 230 days without using or is it from the date that I slipped up?

Just curious.

Thanks

Hello, RG. Welcome to SR.

Some will say from the date of your slip up.

I'm not really counting days now. I did that and felt like a complete failure when I either slipped or relapsed. Now I'm trying to focus on not drinking and moving forward--finding a way to move on with my life and do the things I can't do drunk. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm not worried about the time I have under my belt (the past)--I'm worried about what I'm doing today.

RG, only you can define your recovery. I'm sure you'll get a lot of opinions on this. Best of luck to you on your journey. :wavey:

Hi,

I'd say it would be whatever you're comfortable with.

For me, being honest with myself was a huge part of recovery. Whatever you decide, you have 230 sober days to give you confidence.

We've been through this a few times over on the Class of July thread. People's opinions vary. Here's mine.

I think if you slipped up once or twice and it wasn't some long event then it shouldn't negate your entire time since you decided to quit. Let's say for example that you went 219 days without using and then on day 220 you slipped up, woke up the next day P.O.'d at yourself, haven't used since, and now it's day 230 since you first decided to change your life for the better.

Now lets say there is someone else that has been using the entire time and they quit on the same day that you woke up P.O.'d. - (day 220 for you).

You are miles and miles further down the road than that other person, Roadguy.

There are purists out there that will tell you that you are on day 10 of sobriety just like the other guy, but we know better.

Call it 229 days sober, 230 days since you changed your life, or 229 out of 230 - I think it's up to you.

I'm a sports fan and I would love to be able to say my team is 229 and 1.

Now if we're talking 197 days sober out of 230 or something, then let's go back to square one.

Like Anna, says being honest with myself was a huge part of recovery...
because being dishonest with myself, making excuses, and rationalising things always in my favour, was a huge part of my drinking.

I'm not a day counter anyway. What you do is your business.
Being honest works for me tho...you're only fooling yourself if not anyway :)

Welcome to our recovery community....

The only sober time I count is my own.
As I am a committed AA member....if I took another
drink...I would re start my sobriety date.

For me....being honest is vital.

Good to see you here with us...:)
