Hi this my first time here and my first and hopefully only time at trying to quit drinking. I have been drinking for about 7 years now...didn't start till i got divorced. I know it's really tearing my family apart. I didn't think i had a problem because i don't drink every day. Ususally once a week. But i now realize that i do have a problem because i can't handle or controll my drinking. I don't quit till i'm really wasted. Then i don't quit till i can't get anymore. It's ruining my life. I recently got a dui and in the 6 months since i have gotten 3 driving under suspensions. So it's time to give it up. Hopefully i'll make some good friends here that can tell me how they gave it up. Thanks for letting me get this off my mind.

Welcome to SR!
I'm an addict, so can't tell you how to stop drinking, but I know AA meetings have helped a lot of people. There will be more along to give you some ES&H (experience, strength and hope).
In the meantime, I would read through some posts...both on this forum and the alcoholics. There are some wonderful people here, and you will find you are definitely not alone.
Hugs and prayers!

Hi Gigi - this is a wonderful place that helped me get sober 9 mos. ago after decades of heavy drinking. A counselor once told me, even if you only drink once a year, it's what happens to you when you do that matters. It's dangerous when you can't bring yourself to stop. That's how I was too - once I got on a roll, I'd do anything to keep it going. I ended up drinking almost 24/7 & got 3 DUI's, drove away people I loved, confused & angered my boss & co-workers, got entangled in a huge web of lies. I am so thankful to be out of that mess - and you will be too. Congratulations on your decision to join us.
Welcome Gigi!! You've come to a good place for support and ideas and information. Lots of info at the top of the page in the Alcoholism forum. Read the info on Quitting to get an idea what you'll go thru for a while. I joined here in March, desperate to stop drinking but had many false starts until I finally got it right in mid July. I credit this site for a lot of my being able to stay sober. When I'd want to drink I'd come here first and post about it - well, not at first, but later on I got smart enough to do that and it made quitting easier.
I'm glad you found us!:ghug3

Welcome to SR gigi!
I discovered this site and lurked for a long time. I read the articles and stickies. Then I read the book "Under the Influence". (There are excerpts posted on a sticky here). It helped me understand how and why I could not control my drinking.
I'm on day 67 sober. You can do this!
