5 days no beer & 8 months no smokes
Just turned 49, wife and two sons aged 19 & 16. Starting to get very worried about my health and where I am going, so I need to keep off the beer and start taking off some (a lot of) weight. I have been drinking way too much for a long time so this is going to be tough.

I was 49 when I started AA
have you considered using a structured program ?
