I got my first DUI over the summer, although it was hardly the first time I'd driven drunk. I've struggled since then to stop drinking, and I know that I'm on the road to recovery. The problem, however, is that my license was suspended at the time of the arrest (for non-payment of fines) so it looks like I'm going to be found guilty and will be going to jail. I feel like such an idiot and a loser right now. Especially since I'm finishing up a master's degree and will be looking for new employment within the next 5-6 months. I had wanted to enroll in a teacher certification program, but I don't think I qualify with a DUI. I had no idea how many negative ramifications came with a DUI.
Does anyone have any experience getting a job after being arrested (and convicted) of DUI?

If I were you, I would pursue opportunities outside of jobs that require you to drive a company vehicle or that's not regulated by the DOT. (Assuming you are in the U.S.)
Were you convicted in the county you live in?
Let me know if you have any questions.
Good luck
In PA you are required to have a PA criminal check, a child abuse check and an FBI fingerprint check. My daughter also was finishing her master when she received her 2nd DUI, that was 2 years ago and NO ONE in education will hire her. She works retail and even that took about 10 applications before someone would give her a chance.
Hi, Wolvie! I am not sure what your laws are like where you are at but I wouldn't give up your dream of teaching. I live in Texas and I am a teacher that had a DWI in 2008. I didn't get convicted until 2009 and in order to be certified by my state I had to pass a Federal background check. Well, long story short... I disclosed the misdemeanor and they certified me. I have always listed it on my applications and I have had many job offers as a teacher. I have secured 2 jobs with two different districts. No one has ever questioned me about it. The key is to be upfront and honest, plus be prepared to discuss your charge in an interview if the topic comes up. Everyone makes mistakes and honestly as someone mentioned, it can make you a stronger teacher to overcome as much as you have. I have a very checkered past, but I find that my students can relate to me better than some other teachers because I don't sugar-coat life. Hope this helps.

Thank you all
l Thank you all for your kind words. You've given me hope, and I can't begin explaining how much that helps.
I know some districts and states are more strict about DUI, but will find a way through. Thanks again

I got a DUI back when I was teaching and it didn't affect my job, but I had already been teaching for a while. Nobody even talked to me about. Now, when I moved to California to continue teaching, I put down a "no" when on application when it asked if I have ever been convicted of a crime. Well, after a year of teaching, the DOE caught it and turned into a big deal. Had to fly to Sacramento to talk to a room full of people. When told them I had been through treatment and was attending AA they let it go and I taught for another year. Now I'm living in Florida and substitute teaching. They ran a background check and it never came up. No problem. If it ever does come, just let them know what you are to deal with the problem, AA, SR and anything else your doing, and you'll be fine. Good luck. John

I don't have any legal advice, but I would start doing things that demonstrate you are addressing the issue. AA, maybe attending a MADD class or seminar, anything you can document to show you are being proactive. I don't know where you live, but in the United States, you can usually find employment with 1 DUI, unless it was classified as a gross misdameanor (.20 or higher) then it might make it slightly more difficult. Any job that requires driving would be extremely difficult (taxi, trucking, delivery etc...). I can't imagine every teacher out there does not have a single DUI. Wish you the best.
