"DRY" a memoir by Augusten Burroughs is great- reading it now. He's the guy who wrote Running with Scissors. Wonderful writer- a real mix of humor and the hell of depending on drink.

Drunks -- A movie about a bunch of alcoholics who meet for AA meetings in a church basement in Times Square.

Sister Helen -- This movie won Sundance Director's award. It's a documentary that centers on Sister Helen Travis, an unconventional nun determined to help substance abusers in the South Bronx. She's a recovering alcoholic, who turned to God after hitting rock bottom when her two children and husband died from substance abuse-related causes. The hard-nosed Sister runs a halfway house, dispensing her unique form of tough love in a tireless effort to help recovering addicts.

Yeah, Hi you guys. Nope managed to escape being barred.

Being jumping on and off the wagon in the alcoholic's futile attempt at controlled drinking. It's not happening though but I guess finding out for myself is just part of the process. Might even start a thread "Class of August 2011"

Anyway day 2.

Finally got my book from AA called "Living Sober" which I've been told by other members is very helpful. Good idea, coolmummy! As soon as I have some books LOL! I am waiting for my finances to sort themselves out after my little three year binge!

Taken note of a few of these recommendations. Thanks you guys.

I'm pretty lucky in having two good sized libraries near me.

Just watched three quarters of 'When a Man loves a Woman'. I saw it years ago, but it didn't really mean much to me then! Sobbed my eyes out when she lashed out at her little girl. Don't know if I can bear to see the ending!!

Can't say the following have helped me in my recovery; more good reminders of what it was like -
Seen some re runs of Cagney and Lacey - Christine's descent into alcoholism
Sherrybaby was recently on Film4

I never think the movies get NA and AA quite right but it's always interesting to watch and I always end up saying recovery slogans back to the TV.

Ohhh and of course Russell Brand in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall". Not sure if he's got those seven bands on his neck in real life, but he is seven years' clean.

"Care of the Soul" and "Dark Night of the Soul" by Thomas Moore. I really like his ideas - and the ideas he borrows from other authors. Especially the concept of "daimon", the inner demon we all harbour; he reckons that the only way to deal with our daimon is to come to terms with it, acknowledge and accept its presence, and learn from it. His take on the matter is that addiction is, among other things, a struggle to turn our backs on this powerful force.
