Freudian Slip - you'll get a kick out of this!

So yesterday I went to my first AA meeting ever (a story for another thread). Today I went back. They actually had the nerve to CALL ON ME today :wtf2 (LOL), so I was going to say, "I'm just listening today." Well, you are supposed to say your name and that you're an alcoholic, or that you have the desire to stop drinking. Seeing that I still can't spit out the words, "I'm an alcoholic" I was going to say, "I'm <name> and I have the desire to stop drinking."

Well. What came out was:

"I'm <name> and I have the desire to drink."

And it actually took a second for me to realize what I said! The girl sitting next to me laughed and said, "Don't we all!!" and then I corrected myself. I said, "Wow, was that a freudian slip or what?" and the whole room burst into laughter. I said, "I think it's better if I don't talk today!" :P

OMG. Leave it to me!!!

You're not the first and you sure won't be the last.

Now that was funny! Thanks for sharing. A great way to wake up is to have something to smile about first thing in the morning and I have to love people that can laugh at themselves. I am working on this.

Good one, TryingSoHard!

At my first meeting (last December) my first words were:

"Well, my name is Don and I don't like calling myself an alcoholic...I'm just a drunk."

I was serious, not trying to be funny or anything. The room went silent for a moment and then everyone burst out laughing (including me).

Saying "I'm an alcoholic" was like coughing up a hairball for quite some time :). It's good when we can laugh at ourselves!

Hahaha..that's hilarious!!! I've caught myself writing "addict" when I've tried to write "active"...many times on this site! lol

That is wonderfully hilarious!! Especially considering everyone was laughing WITH you, not AT you. I love making people laugh. Laughter is good medicine.

TryingSoHard 09-12-2008 08:49 PM

Least, they actually made a point of saying that to me when the meeting ended (this was right at the end anyway). They said, "Please don't think we're laughing AT you, we're laughing WITH you"... and I WAS laughing!! I was embarrassed as he!! but I was laughing anyway. :)

And I got lots of hugs, too.

That's too funny. Thanks for sharing your story. I'm glad your going to meetings. Laughter is always the best medicine.
