Becareful if you relapse! You may not make it back!

Hello! I just wanted to share 2 quick stories of people that kept playing "Russian rullet" with alcohol and finally lost.

First: My friend in treatment relapsed and ended up in the hospital and was just diagnosed with Hepatitis C and has to do 48 weeks of chemo and has severe liver cirrosis. She is only 23 years old!
Second: My husband's cousin was found dead 2 days ago in his apartment from drinking too much alcohol and not waking up. His heart stopped. He was only 22 years old!

Hopefully their stories will help us all stay sober today. I know they would want us to be OK.

Jails, institutions, and death.

The lucky ones wind up in jails & institutions.... how lucky is that...?

Thank you for sharing that. I just posted a thread myself regarding the same thing.

My cousin died today from the effects of alcoholism. He was only 43.

Then, a short time later, I found out my cousin's son, on the other side of my Family, died in a car accident today. We have reason to believe that drugs or alcohol was involved in his death as well. He was only 27.

My own sister died in 1991 from cirrhosis of the liver at the age of 26.

Cunning, baffling and power . . . as well as deadly.

Jen Thank you for reminding us how powerful addiction can be. And to you too, Serenity.

Just to keep things in perspective...only about 1 in 10 people develope addictions. But sometimes it can happen in clusters, of course. Like in towns where drinking is a big part of living.

It is always so sad to lose anyone, but especially those that are so young.

Thank you for that sad reminder of what hasn't happened to me YET. I keep those thoughts in my head for when the demon yells in my ear for 'just one drink'. I am sorry for your loss. Maybe their terrible misfortune will help them to stop drinking. I will keep you and your friends in my prayers.

Prayers for your losses.

My father continues to drink even though he has Parkinson's affect and drinking makes the symptoms much worse. I understand the insanity but it is really hard to explain it to my sister.

I'm sorry, Jen. Thank you for the reminder. Hell, I'm only 28. That could just as easily be me.

It has been said that some must die in order to show the rest of us how serious drinking problems can be.

Unfortunately I have found the statement to be true.

Fortunately though - and this is what is most important:

IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE YOU THAT SETS THE BAD EXAMPLE.

(My sincerest condolences to all of those who have gone before us....)

Jen, thanks for the reminder and I am sorry for your loss.

While I don't believe that others must die so we can live I do believe it opens our eyes to the fact that this is no game. I am so grateful that simple act of not drinking is enough to put this "disease" into remission.

Congrats on your sobriety!

Jen,
I am so sorry. They were so young. What can we do? How do we make them see what we already know? I know now, looking back, nobody could tell me anything. Do you have to go through this to know how bad it is and that you must stop? Our diversity makes this world but, is there not one message, one technique, one prayer?
