LogCabin 08-15-2008 02:13 PM

Keep up the good work, Angie. I have never liked the feeling of throwing up. How long do you have to be on Antabuse? And then what do you do after you finish it? Do you take it at the same time as working on a program?

angie9 08-15-2008 02:18 PM

Hi I take it first thing in the morning and my counceller has suggested at least 6 months with councelling as well :0). I dont think its harmful as long as you dont drink :0) I even put purfume on and didnt react

Dee74 08-15-2008 02:44 PM

yeah worry about after the 6 months a ways down the track Ang :)
For now - I'm very glad it's working for you :)

Great choice on your decision to get sober at any length.. I am proud of you!!!

tommyk 08-15-2008 04:17 PM

Yes, whatever it takes, good job.

kj3880 08-15-2008 07:12 PM

Have they tried you on Campral yet? My ex said it killed the cravings real well for alcohol. Then for some dumb reason, he stopped taking it....grrr

angie9 08-15-2008 09:16 PM

havent heard of campral wonder if we have them here??

Dee74 08-15-2008 09:37 PM

I don't know anything much about these medications Ang, and I'd reckon neither does anyone else here :eek13:

just go with what you've been prescribed by the professionals Ang :)

Hey ang,

Sounds to me like antibuse is working really well for you.Unless that stops-I'd just keep doing what you're doing. You're sounding better than I've heard you in a very long time and I'm pleased for you. If you decide you need something else further down the track then sure-talk to your doctor about it if you think it's necessary.

You're doing great as is!

Hey darl,

I know my profile says "whoville" but Im actually down the better end of the north island (go the twins BTW whoop whoop!) and as far as I know we dont get Campral subsided here. However the generic name might dispute that ( I dunno what the generic is). However we do get Naltrexone (the yanks call it Revia) fully subsidised for alcohol craving reduction. I think you have to go through a phsychiatrist or hospital specialist to get it though. I did antabuse though my GP last year and it kept me sober - just beware of sauces at resturants! I got in trouble with a steak, that made me nauseous - ther was reduced alcohol in the sauce. Even mouthwash can get you in trouble!! Naltrxone better cause after a few weeks it removes cravings AND blocks receptors in brain to effects so no matter what you drink - you cant feel effects! Great huh! Ask your GP what is available, and in the meantime take some luvvies from another kiwi! We have got heaps of government help available - take it darl, take it!!!!

Gerts.

did I miss the memo where medical advice is allowed now? :eek13:

By all means ask what's available if you're not happy Ang, but IMO we need to leave the prescribing to the professionals :)

Im sorry - I guess I missed where medical advice was given? I see a thread about what is working for an individual I didn't see anyone suggesting we should all rush out and get Antabuse.... Maybe I didn't see that. If you're referring to my reply by the above quote I was simply replying with my experience and what is available in our country. I also clearly said to ask your GP (General Practitioner, NZ term for Doctor) and to take the help available from our government....

Im not sure which medical advice you are refering to in your sarcastic and slightly caustic comment. Perhaps you'd like to clarify?

hi Gertiegirl nice to see another kiwi I had a word with my councellor as I was tossing up naltrexene but her and I suggested if anutibuse is working for me then ist fine. I find if I take it first thing in the morning it takes away my thoughts of drinking coz Im so scared at the thought of having a reaction. I hope I didnt upset anyone about me going on about antibuse Im jsut thrilled that ist helping me I was starting to thaink I was going to end up on a park bench somewhere with no family freinds and have to bear in mind Im one drink away from that. I certainly love the hangover free mornings just love em. I dont think Dee was being sarcastic hes a lovely lovely guy and is very caring and probably coz Ive being chatting to him for a year or so is protective. when you get to know him your will love him to he has a great sence of humour and is very kind

Dee74 08-16-2008 02:25 PM

I am :05: :lmao

but awwww thanks Ang

Gertiegirl 08-16-2008 05:55 PM

lol No worries, as I said to Dee - Im always grumpy and jump to defensive in the mornings (not hangover... just natural I havnt had a decent nights sleep since I cut out the booze and Im an ogre without enough sleep) and it WAS my bad...

I should have said naltrexone works better for me, not that its better full stop. :doh That can easily be misread as medical advice... so slap hand on my part. And awwwww, theres a couple of peeps here who I would protect (now where are they jumping to my defense???) too so it makes sense.

My bad... I been up for a few hours now and in a better mood, so hereby and forthwith confess the error of my ways.

Congrats on your sober time Ang, and Im delighted that whatever meds are helping!
Luvvies.

Good onya Angie.

The Doc works for me, I get on with recovery and leave other tings to the professionals.
