Baby Turtles!!!! Move over kitten lovers! For years I have been a baby turtle saver... I stop in the middle of the road to let the momma diamond back terrapin lay her eggs. I get cheers and jeers over this, but I don't care. I watched the garbage men run over a big momma out in front of my house. I ran out and scooped up the eggs she was gonna lay and placed them in the ground. My kids love the wild baby turtles and the excitement of waiting for the lil leathery eggs to hatch. Have a pet turtle as a kid...and you will have a great respect for nature...and all her beautiful creatures out there. SAVE THE DIAMOND BACK TERRAPIN!!!! |

We had three little baby slider turtles for awhile, their shells were about the size of quarter. One of them got sick and was making little coughing sounds, wouldn't eat and would hold his mouth open all the time. So I called around to about 10 different veternarians until I could find one that woud see him. So I took him in a little tiny cardboard jewlery box to this veterinarian. It was comical because the doctor was a big buff muscle bound guy, and as he was holding litttle Farkus it looked ridiculously off balance. Anyway Farkus had an upper respiratory infection and I was sent home with seringes (sp) and antibiotic, that I had to administer. It was so sad giving him these injections everyday, I felt like a montster. Farkus was well after the 7 days of injections. The three of them now live in a pond. :) BTW lilbit - I love your good heart. |
Turtles are sooo cute. I had forty of 'em as a kid. Big brackish water pond. A monster to clean out every three days. But I took my responsibility with great stride and at the end of the season...I let the lil turtles go. All lived and thrived under my care. These days....I don't see as many as when I was a kid. Sandy lots have been paved over. Cars go screaming by. Kinda sad. But I'll always remember the joy the lil buggers gave me. |

Ananda - One of the turtles looked like the one eating the fish her name was pippy, because the pattern on the bottom of her shell looked like pippy longstockings. The other 2 looked more like the picture of the baby one - only one of them had a ridge down it's back. |
Lil, you running a reptile zoo over there or what?? Up here in Minnesota, we have a lot of large snapping turtles in the lakes, and some "leatherback's" (Softshell turtles). Not too great for pets. I love what you are doing though! One of my fantasy trips is to go to Costa Rica and see the great turtle migration to lay their eggs on the beach at midnight.. Heavy |
Diamond backs are kinda like those. Kinda. We have an awesome sanctuary for them in Stone Harbour, NJ. Called the Wetlands Institute. If anybody gets down the Joisey State Parkway...its worth a looky loo. |

I have a red eared slider! We have had it for about a year and a half. The bugger grows SO much! I live in So Cal and we don't have turtles just hanging out, we have to buy them from pet stores. After I bought this one for my little girl, I read they live like 50 years! Kinda freaky to think I might have to will this pet to someone ROFL |
Sometimes the eggs won't hatch. Just a natural selection. Don't get too upset. We had a giant leatherback wash up in Townsend's Inlet, NJ. Right under the bridge. They just bulldozed the body back into the ocean. Kinda sad. Poor thing died and we just watched 'em shove the body back into the sea. They didn't want the tourist to get upset. |
