biggest test yet this weekend

I'm hitting the road again. Going to Kansas for the weekend to celebrate my wife's grandmothers 100th birthday.
Here's the problem. When we get there, there will be no more than 8 coolers filled with Coors. This family is all about Late nights, Beer and Nascar, I'm sure I'll get a little fun loving grief from everyone.
Does anyone have any good advice about how to handle this? I don't forsee myself having a problem with a little teasing, but the temptation will be there and the peer poressure from some too...

Hey - great thread. I think many of us have this issue.

I myself am going on a "guy's weekend" up at a lake in GA. As you said, there'll be coolers everywhere, and nothing to do but ride around on the boat, jet ski, play poker, and DRINK...(what a way to start this thing, right?). In any event, I gotta be strong and laugh at the drunken idiots I'll be hanging out with, right? I'm just going to stick to my trusty water, but I'm sure I'll get plenty of ribbing along the way!

Wow, all I can say is I hope you get through it.

I couldn't have done that. I would have been miserable.

Enjoy your weekend!

I dont have much advice either. But your not alone.
I too will have a moment of truth this weekend. Most of family is leaving. And they are leaving me a vehicle. And I will have money in my posesseion.
They leave today and wont be back until Monday.
So lets make a deal.
If you dont..I wont.
Well...Either way I am not going to anyway. But you get the idea.
Hope you come back with great news. You can do it.
And wow..100 yrs old is awesome.
Have some good sober fun.
Have a laugh at all the people drinking. Great sport that goes well with Nascar. People watching.

Although I do not know what it is like what you guys/gals go through as I'am not a drinker-However-IMHO If you feel like they are getting to a point where it just is not
funny anymore I would just say hey listen I can handle the jokes but in all honesty this
has been a tuff road for me and this was my choice to change my life for me and I would appreciate a little less joking about it.

But then again who am I!? just a little codie!

I commend you for going through with the trip and will send you positive thoughts
that you will come out on TOP!

Yeah I've put up with some ribbing from family about my abstinence, but it's no joke and I'll tell them so!

100 is a pretty special birthday, but .. if you feel it's going to be that big of a test, I just wouldn't go.

Take your cooler filled with non alcoholic drinks.
Then you will have no need to dip into theirs.

Enjoy your visit...

Wow...what a crazy upcoming weekend for a lot of us! This weekend there's a reunion at a bar that I'm going to. I'm driving, so I'm already setting the foundation for not drinking. I know I won't drink there, I just don't know what it'll be like to see so much booze. Will I crave? Will I relapse later? Who knows! But if I succeed....ahhhh, what another great milestone for me to have hit!

Good luck to all of you! I expect updates next week on how we all did! I KNOW we can do this!

If you are in AA find a meeting, let folks in the program know you WILL be calling them and stick to it..... CALL, call some body just as the drinking starts and then call others when ever you feel a bit edgy.

One very important thing.................. Make sure you have an out, that you have total control over. Do not ride with some one else, make sure if you need to leave you can and not be dependent on some one else.

There is nothing wrong with going to bed early either.

I bet you will be surprised to see that others go to bed early as well. I assume there will be kids there, why not arrange a card game or something like that with them?

Use every tool in your recovery toolbox to stay sober, even with everyone around you drinking and/or getting drunk. Actually I think it would be fun to "people watch" and see what the drunks do and say when they are drunk. You can be glad you're not the one doing stupid stuff.

You can get thru this without drinking!!

Honor yourself and your Grandmother by staying sober! Think of how wonderful you will feel upon your return, posting here with your head held high. (Cue Argent-Hold Your Head Up)

I wish you the very best. You CAN do this!
