Question about AA

So I have decided I think I want to go to some meetings. I've looked on the GA AA website and it is very confusing with the open/closed/discussion, etc....it's like reading greek.

Any advice to find a group? Ideally I'd like to find one with younger (i'm 29 going on 30) professionals, not sure if that exists....any help is useful though!

Open means that anyone can go, whether they're an alcoholic or not. Closed means that only alcoholics can go. The rest I don't know. I'm new to this, too. I don't know if they differentiate meetings based on age, either, but I've heard others say they've attended "newcomer" meetings, for people new to AA. Maybe that would be a good place to start?

Plenty of meetings in your area, I was in Roswell last month and managed to get to a meeting in Dallas where I caught up with our own CarolD from SR.

Here's the website for meetings in your area atlantaaa.org

"Any advice to find a group?"

Go to some different meetings in your area. Don't judge an AA group by the behaviors/actions of another group. Meetings and groups can VARY widely.

Closed vs. Open... go to either, if anyone asks (doubtful) say that you think you might be an alcoholic, or if you're comfortable with it just admit that you are an alcoholic and everything will be fine.

Please - don't go to one or two meetings and base the entire AA program on what you find there. I hate some meetings and love others, they've each got a 'personality' so to speak.

Hey tooold, the best advice I can give you is to call the AA hotline in your area, they can answer all of your questions about meetings in your area, they can even arrange for some one to meet you at a meeting to where you do not have to go alone.

There are young person groups in Southern California, I know that for a fact. I would guess in a place as large as Atlanta, these would exist too.

However, there is nothing wrong with going to a regular AA meeting and hearing what a 50 year old that has been sober for 2 years has to say. You'll get a good idea where alcoholism will take you if you let it. This probably won't be so graphic in a young person's meeting.
