What Works

Ok, I have been given a couple of choices at work
I failed a drug test for cocaine , I am not a regular uses but i do seem to binge every 6m or so. My work wants me to go to a 60 day inhouse rehab or go to NA meetings.. I have in the past been to a 6m program for the use of oxycontin and i def needed that at the time. My question is do you think meetings will be effective or should i look into a inhouse rehab? I do not need to detox i've been clean for almost 3wks. The binge is over. I just want to make sure i do not binge again.. I believe i do not talk about my problems and things in life and it all builds up then i supress these with a binge. I have started seeing a councelor in the last 2 wks. But my real question is i've never really been to NA / AA meetings and i was wanting to know if they are affective?

thank you
mike

Mike not sure what kind of inhouse rehab you went through for the oxycontin, but I would really be surprised to learn that they did not reccommend some sort of continuing program like NA or another program to maintain your staying clean.

I am an alcoholic, I went through medical detox and maintain my sobriety via AA. Addiction and alcoholism are very close to the same issue, once an alcoholic/addict, always an alcoholic/addict. There is no cure for either, they can both be controlled through total abstinance.

I am strictly speaking from my own experience, but I have stayed very happily sober using AA for almost 2 years, this was after a 40 year drinking career, the last 5 of which were pure hell. NA is also IMHO an excellent program that is based off of AA. Many addicts use both NA & AA to stay clean.

The 60 day inhouse rehab may be a darn good way to get a good start in staying clean using NA/AA as a long term maintenance program for staying clean.

NA... the greatest show on Earth.

(And all other planets too, I suspect.)

Mike, I started going to NA meetings and I was a total non-believer. I just wanted to go, so I could say I went, and that all of it was ********. Well... it changed my life. I cannot say enough about what the NA program and the 12 steps did for me.

Go, and be excited about a new way of life.

Yes its a SPoof my name is not really Mike hunt.. But i've used this name since the first day i entered the enternet 15 yrs ago.. (LOL).. I just need to figure out what i need to do.. I can't realy afford to go to some in house program.. I have bills and things to take care of and the fact that i am on Probation that would bassically be admitting i am still using drugs and there for could possible be a violation of probation .. I've never went to meetings myself So i was just wondering what they were like and if they work.. I have talked to people who still go to meetings and have been clean from 1yr - 20yrs.. Well i think i wil lgo to my first NA meeting tonight..

mike I have to assume that NA meetings are similar to AA meetings and on that note I would suggest you go to several different meetings.

My experience in AA has been that every meeting has it's own personality, most meetings I find to be very good, but on occassion there are some that in my opinion are not for me!!!! We are all different and I need to accept that those meetings I find do not work for me do work for others, so I am not knocking them.

One other thing to be prepared for is NA, like AA is a cross section of society, there will be some real jerks at some, some so-so folks, and some really great folks. Most of the people in AA are darn good people, but there are some that are not. Like I said, there are no rules so any one seeking recovery or claiming to want recovery can be there.

Listen for similarities to you and not the differences. Show up a little early just to mingle a bit before the meeting and set aside a little time for chat after the meeting.
