Day 1 - hellish detox

Very long time very heavy drinker. It`s cost me so much from life including my fiance, jobs etc. Basically I was drinking all day everday huge amounts. Stopped eating for a week constantly throwing up - cannot sleep. I was so sick today I thought I was going to die. Shaking so much I could barely walk, so sick to my stomach, sweating etc.
I have detoxed at home alone before and it was never this bad. i managed to eat a small amount of fruit and drank a bunch of water. I have a small amount of ativan to use. I have no job or insurance so medical detox is kind of out.
If I live thru this I will never drink again. It`s hell. I read the thread in the other forum about detoxing but if any one has any more tips I`d appreciate them..

To the best of my knowledge if you show up at an emergency room they will treat you regardless of insurance.

Don't die.

Welcome to the site, daydreamer. You sound like you're in pretty bad shape. Seriously, go to the ER if you are feeling that bad - alcohol detox is really dangerous.

Keep us posted on how you're doing.

Your symptoms sound bad. Detoxing can be very dangerous.
Please go to the E.R. to get checked out.

alcohol detox

When I started my withdrawals I ended up at the emergency room 3 nights in a row. I didn't know that I was going through withdrawals though so the first two nights I got treated for severe anxiety and was sent home with meds. By the third day I was seeing and hearing things, shaking out of control, and super paranoid. I looked online about my symptoms and they led me to alcohol withdrawals. By that night, I went back to the emergency room but this time my sister went with me...the minute I mentioned withdrawals along with my symptoms, the doctor sent in a case worker who automatically suggested detox after a couple of short tests. After a while, a van showed up to take me to detox. I was extremely scared because I didn't know what to expect or where I was going. For the next 5 days I was put on thiamine, folic acid, and high amounts of librium for the anxiety. Then for the last 2 days I just took vitamins and then was discharged. I felt a lot safer going to a detox center because I was under medical supervision. I'm not sure where an emergency room will send you for detox but noone is supposed to go through detox by themselves. You are supposed to seek medical attention right away due to the risks involved with withdrawals. Get to an emergency center, let them know you are suffering from "severe" alcohol withdrawals and that you need help NOW! Call someone to take you if you can't drive and worry about the medical bills later.
I pray that you will get through this and find the help that you need.

Thanks for the replies wveryone! Beginning day 2 = made it thru last night. Managed to sleep a bit - not too much. Still not really wanting to eat or anything - having to force anything down. The shakes seem improved.
Woke up with weird mouth pain.

A great natural way to catch some Z's is by taking melatonin. You can get it anywhere that sells vitamins. It comes in 3mg or 5mg. I had to take it on and off for a couple of weeks till my sleep pattern became a bit more normal. I'm glad to hear you are doing better.

I'm glad you're feeling better, Daydreamer. Remember this bottom: it'll help you come up.

If you start feeling bad again, go to the emergency room. If it costs a bundle, so be it. You've got the rest of your life to pay it back. Don't take risks with your health.

I'll say a prayer for you too!

Day 4 - hanging in there. Stil not able to eat very much - drinking water and gatorade. Something is wrong with my mouth/tooth/throat painful. Using the ativan to help level me (it doesnt do much) Got a script for thioridazine today which should help me sleep more.
Did have some thoughts of drinking but am resisting.
Thanks for the replies everyone!

DD I am glad to see you are still around, days 3 thru 5 are usually the worst, but not always, I have heard of the DTs coming on as late as the 7th day. So what are you doing along the lines of recovery?

Feel free to post anywhere you like.

All threads and forums are open to everyone, except the women's and men's forums.

Daydreamer,

I think you should continue this thread, it is still the same story.

Anna nailed it, they are all open except mens/womens rooms. The only other thing I definitely do not do is preach AA in the secular forums. That would not help get or keep anyone sober, which is why we are here after all.

So how are you doing?

Day 9 - feeling ok. I`m sleeping, eating - not alot but at least once or twice a day. Taking alot of vitamins and drinking a ton of water. Time to start tapering off the ativan. Still have cravings for alcohol but resisting. Read a litle bit of the big book the other night. I think I`m going to move to the under 2 weeks thread as this thread has fallen to the third page.

daydreamer, the weird mouth pain that you were/are feeling could be from clenching your teeth/jaw at night when you sleep....I had that the last time I stopped... Hope you're doing ok!
