Hun! If I still smoked I would quit with you! I quit nearly 24 yrs ago. It's WONDERFUL!! You will taste foods like you've never tasted them before. Er...sometimes that's a bad thing. Like..."what the f*ck did I see in that?!" For the most part...it's awesome! You'll smell things differently...you'll smell differently! And you get to keep your lungs!!
I wish you the best on this one!
If you beat all three of these addictions at the same time...you will REALLY accomplish something! Be careful though...don't push too hard. The first two are your immediate lifesavers.
It was cold turkey for me. When I found out I was preggers I quit everything! Smoking, caffeine, drugs and alcohol. The only thing I never really went back to was smoking. It felt that good to stop!

Congratulations on your decision! I am on day 6 of no smoking. I take Chantix- I had tried most of the other methods, and for me they just didn't work. Chantix is awesome! It was so much easier this time- another thing I did was read Alan Carr's book "The Easy Way to Quit Smoking". For me, the book alone wasn't enough, but it really made me see smoking in a different light. I'd highly suggest it!
I agree with what whiskerkissed said- quitting everything at once is a lot to bite off. I will have 3 years clean in NA next month, and am just now quitting. I remember going to rehab and telling them (while high) that I wanted to quit smoking while I was there. They literally laughed at me. However, I have known a few who did it.
When I had less time and was trying to quit, I was told by my sponsor to be really aware of how I was feeling. If I felt like I wanted to use more than usual, pick the cigs back up. I think that's a great suggestion.
GOOD LUCK! You can do this! Feel free to send me a message if you need support! I'm right there with you!

I definitely want to quit! Tired of it! The smell, the taste, the hacking, and like you said, "9 dollars a pack here in NYC"! I am going to quit with you, man! My plan is to start at 6:00pm tonight...I've been gearing myself up for it, and I think it is Time! Thanks for the post! It's so ironic that someone else is quitting today too! LOL Let's do it!!!!
evanrudenyc,
Congratulations on your decision! It's the best one you can make. I applaude you!
And btw, my smoke cessation said that statistically, it's easier to quit all substances together! Yea, can ya believe it? But, your doing it anyway, and it's the same behaviors for all substances, and they all kill you, so, you might as well do it all at once.
Feel free to join us in the nicotine forum! We're a small, but, very supportive group! And there's lots of good information on quitting in the stickies above and also, throughout the threads. Here's the link, if you're interested:

Hope to see you and all you other "quitters" down there soon!
Shalom!

Congratulations on quitting! The last time I used was also the last time I smoked (In my head they're very closely linked) and it was hard- but I'm glad that I did it then, as a whole process of getting healthy. It can be really difficult I guess, to do it all at once, but I'm kind of intense regardless. Some stuff that helped me-
-I'd put off smoking for ten minutes, and just stay in that ten minutes. Then, I'd try to do it for ten more.
-I bought a ton of sugar free suckers. Sometimes I just wanted something to put in my mouth, or to fidget with, and if I was grouchy and still craving a cigarette I could chew on the stick until it was dead.
-I made lists of the positive things that I felt every day (this is good for all addictions probably) It started with 'not reeking like smoke anymore' as my only thing on day 1, and now includes being able to run 8 miles without wheezing, my teeth are whiter, my skin looks better, I'm generally less irritable etc. It's a long list today.

evan,
Congratulations sweetie! You will feel sooo much better once all those harmful toxins get out of your system! I wish I could quit now with you, but I'm with felly on that one, I just don't think I could handle quitting right now.
I'm already a little disappointed with myself, though. I had a goal that I made several years ago that I would quit when I either got pregnant or turned 30. Well, I don't hear any pitter-pat of little feet in the house, and I turned 30 on May 19. Sooooooo, here I am smoking more than ever. But I know I will quit one of these days. Hopefully not too far from now.
Good luck on your quest my friend! As far as smoking cessation goes, I can tell you that most people have some withdrawals from it, usually feel worse than usual for the first week or so, sometimes come down with a cold or bronchitis, etc. . . All of this is usually within the first couple of weeks though, and it really is your body's way of getting rid of the toxins! So hang in there buddy!!! Sounds like you've got a great plan and several friends here to join you and support you! You truly are saving your own life!

Hey, today is my day 1 of quitting too - can i join your team? Can I can I? I need as much help as I can get!
I had stopped smoking for a year and a half... slowly but surely let myself start up again... need to be done for good this time!

I quit smoking two weeks ago today. I always smoked when I drank and was sure that my hangover was more from the pack or two of smokes I smoked the night before than the beer. I now know for sure that smoking was a big part of my hangovers as I have quit smoking but have not quit drinking...still working on that one. I made it through the weekend without drinking...until about 3:30 yesterday afternoon...I ended up drinking 14 beers! Yikes! But I am at work and actually not feeling to bad besides being tired...If I had of smoked my usual pack or two while I drank I probably would have had to call in sick...I know I have to stop drinking but at the same time I am soooo proud of myself for quitting smoking...I really can't believe I did it. I read allen carrs easy way to stop smoking...it's really good at de-brainwashing you and getting you to realize that cigarettes don't bring anything to the party...your only smoking to fill up your nicotine tank so you will feel normal...like a non-smoker. Cigarettes suck! Good luck to you all.
Now, on to that drinking problem...

for the Team name
Hats off to ya for wanting to put down what I consider to be the nastiest habit on the planet. I smoked off and on (mostly on) for 40 plus years and quit seven years ago this coming Thursday. Up to four packs of Marlboro Menthol a day!! Year before last when I had a complete physical the doctor said my lungs were completely healed and no traces of anything were remaining. PTL on that one.
So stick with this one and best to you. It can be done.

I made it through day one! It wasn't even a struggle really - although I know not every day will be like that. I went to the gym after work, and then didn't stop to buy cigs on the way home. Once I got home, I felt "safe" - I knew I wouldn't go back out to get any. Yay! I'm going to do the same thing today and hope it goes as well...
How's everyone else doing?

Well I would join you all if I still smoked, but I quit Sept. 18, 2007. That was my one year anniversary of not drinking.
When I went into detox the doctor who I went to is an Alcoholism and Addiction specialist who has authored or co-authored the majority of Alcoholism/Addiction Text used in medical schools today, Dr. Schultz told me that I needed to tackle one problem at a time. He told me to not even try to quit smoking until I had my alcoholism well under control. Well...... I listened and after 1 year of sobriety I used the same program to quit smoking that I did to stay stopped drinking and have been smoke and alcohol free ever since.
Keep at it folks, I wish you all the best, the rewards are well worth the effort!!!!
