Joined today and hoping day 1 goes well.
I finally decided that it was time to deal with this. My wife and I had lunch and I told her I had to stop drinking. She is well aware of this. I have never tried to stop before and I am praying that day 1 (today) goes well. Then, day 2, day 3 . . .
Any tips? I have not yet had a chance to catch up on the forum posts, so I am sorry if this is in the wrong section or if this question is already answered.
Wish me luck

Welcome to SR and you definitely in the RIGHT place! Day 1 will go just fine. You will get plenty of great advice from people with a lot more experience then me. I just wanted to say welcome and stick around. Glad you are here.
Great decision.
Newcomers sounds like the best place for a newcomer to me.
There is also an alcoholics section. But it doesnt really matter where you post.
Ask away anything your heart desires.
I am not a drinker but it takes alot to admit you need or want help.
Glad you are here.

Welcome Jwell
Only advice I have is just stick with it, take one day at a time.
Think I've posted on this site now 47 out of the last 48 days I've been sober.
Keep reading, posting and learning, I found the first 5 days the worst, things got better after that.
Hope to hear how well your doing
All the best

Thank you all for your support and encouragement. I am off to the store to get some B1 vitamins that my wife recommended. Kid's softball game after that should keep me busy until 8 pm. Then the problem will really rear its head, since my wife won't be home until 9. Maybe I will take the dog for a walk for the first time in years.
Hi Jwell!
Have you thought about hitting some AA meetings? It has helped me because I started drinking as soon as I got off work, throughout the evening. Soooo...I really needed to be out of the house for the first couple of weeks. Seriously I would wander around, aimless. Plus I was the only one that understood, because I hid all my drinking!
Post here, exercise, or go to a meeting!!
Welcome and good luck.

Welcome jwell - be thankful you've come to this conclusion. I wish I had 20 years ago. I spent far too long trying to "moderate" and of course it never worked. You will be understandably jittery and frustrated at times, but it's all worth it, and your feelings will improve over time. I am at 5 mos. and this past month has been the best one yet, where I don't have as many longings for the old days (a big problem when you've used it to anesthetize yourself for decades-it's like losing an old friend & learning to live again.) SR has been a miracle for me. I'm sure you'll receive plenty of wonderful advice. Some find AA a lifesaver. For me, I had to get past the idea that I could ever relive the fun days of my early drinking. I poisoned myself with it, and in the end 100 proof vodka didn't do a thing for me. It never made me happy or relaxed. Kept trying, though - the result was 3 DUI's. embarassment, lost respect and trust, health issues, on and on....you never have to reach that point. Be happy. Sending you love & hope. Joanie

I genuinely appreciate all of your replies. Day one will be a success. I am experiencing some light headedness, dizziness and abdominal pain, but I understand this is normal. Took the dog to the softball game and then out to dinner with my youngest. I find it helpful to post here, so you may see me around, We'll see how sleeping goes.

Sleeping
Last night was not that bad from what I understand. Restless sleeping and night sweats, but that was it. I feel good this morning. No shakes, sweats, light headedness, etc. Although it was a monir accomplishment, I am proud that I have come clean with this and beat day 1. Now I need to get day 2 under my belt.
Just take it one day at a time, an hour at a time, or even a minute!!!!
Be williing to try different things to help stay sober, new activities, check out recovery programs if you find your self struggling.
Just be willing to do what ever it takes to stay sober.

[QUOTE=Daddio;1815718] LOL. I guess that day one didn't go as well as I thought, but the dog is a great fielder. Thanks for the afternoon chuckle.
