Welcome to SR!

With that BP, I'd get over to a doctor right away. I don't know about other substances, but I know that alcohol detox can be fatal. (In rare cases, obviously, but better safe than sorry!)

How can it be fatal? I've read it can do brain damage, which is very scary, but I don't know how it can kill you? Causes strokes?...

SamDamn - To be honest, I don't know the specifics. I know it can cause seizures, which could be fatal when not under medical supervision. And the skyrocketing BP certainly isn't good, either.

Yes, detoxing can be fatal. It's really best to check with your dr or go to an ER.

Sorry I'm being morbid but, I am considering cold turkey. Probably not a good idea from what I've heard.

Not a good idea at all.

Talk to your dr.

Sam,

The symptoms vary by what you have been taking, how much, how long, and if you are taking multiple substances. Look up "alcohol withdrawals" or "Delirium tremens" on wiki and it tells you a lot. Alcohol withdrawal is actually many times more dangerous than opiate withdrawal.

The advice to call your Dr, and be 100% honest about what/how much/how long/how often, etc. is the only way to go here.

Withdrawing from alcohol can and does kill!

High blood pressure can lead to a stroke, which can be fatal, it can also cause a heart attack.

Seizures (DT's) can cause death due to numerous things associated with seizures.

The DT's may not show up until the 3rd to 5th day.

I would say seeing a doctor ASAP would be a good idea..... possibly life saving!!!

Are you willing to gamble your life just to where your doctor or someone else may not know you have an alcohol problem?

Suki, thanks for posting that thread info. - that was a great help to me when I detoxed. (No health insurance, did it alone...) I was told I should never have tried detoxing without medical supervision - could've had a seizure, stroke or heart attack - as mentioned by Taz. I had been drinking very heavily 24/7 for weeks, though - so I know it's not that way for everyone. The feelings you're having are the same ones I had a few years ago the first time I tried to quit, so they are normal. Please be careful and let us know how you're making out.

100% agree.

I ended up in the ER a month ago because I didn't listen to my body. Being open and honest about this to your doctor will make it a lot safer than trying to do it on your own.
