New here... Hi everyone
Hi. I'm new as the title explains. I am in no way suffering with problems some of you guys are/have done. I am sorry for that. I do not know if there is a place for me here. I stopped smoking 2 weeks ago, it is going well. I am continuing to drink though. Twice as much since I quit the cigarettes. I suffer from depression, I am prescribed fluoxetine or prozac as you may know it. I am wanting to get myself better and not dependent on anyhting. I feel that anything that comes my way, I get addicted to.
I have read how supportive you guys are, and hope I can both offer support and get some.

WELCOME!
Something I heard that stuck, don't compare. I was always fond of comparing myself to folks that I thought had problems that were much worse than mine.
Branwen welcome to SR. I will back what John said, do not compare, instead find things you can relate to.
Keep in mind it is not how much, how often, or how long one has drank that determines if they are an alcoholic or not, it is what happens when we drink.
Here is a simple test that imho is very accurate Alcoholics Anonymous : being honest with myself I can see that I was an alcoholic by the time I was 18 or 19 yet it was not causing me any real problems then. I easily scored 5-6 by the time I was 18-19 and was close to acing it by the time I quit.

Welcome to the forum. This is a safe, friendly, and supportive site for those who want to stop drinking. AA is also very helpful for that. If you go to meetings, ask for phone numbers of the people there so you have someone to talk to when/if you want a drink.
You can do it, you can get sober, just don't drink for today!:ghug

Welcome to the group. I just joined myself.
One thing about substance abuse is that the scope is broad. The fact that you landed here shows you probably belong. We all battle different things, but the unifying characteristic is that we're all in the fight together.
You may save yourself from 30 years of drug abuse by learning from other's mistakes...What I mean is that you don't have to try every drug out there to know whether or not you'll get addicted.
Cheers, and I'll look for you on the board.

Hi Branwen, welcome to SR!
I was told to listen for the similarities rather than the differences, and in doing so I discovered I was an alcoholic like so many others. Hope you keep reading and posting, it sounds like you're in the right place!

Hi Branwen, welcome to SR!! I am trying to recover from alcoholism as well, and I am on antidepressents. I would say, kick the alcohol and then work on the meds, that is what im doing on my psychiatrist's orders. Good luck, and I hope you stick around.
