...have something in common...particularly, if you happen to be an alcoholic postman! "Neither rain, nor sleet, nor dead of night..."

We had a blizzard in January '78, when all the schools were closed, there was no traffic on the streets, the snow was above your knees...but, it didn't stop me from walking three long blocks to the nearest liquor store for a gallon of wine. Yep...while other folks were stocking up on bread and milk, I was stocking up on my "drug of choice"! Thank goodness that isn't the case any more.

Today... it would be a good day to stay snuggled in bed! I think the folks here are blaming me for the 3" - 4", and still falling...because I wore my "Let It Snow" sweatshirt yesterday. I kept telling them I'm not that powerful! Anyway, it looks pretty, if you don't have to drive in it.

I've actually heard stories of postmen stashing bottles in the boxes where they picked up the mail for delivery. Nothing beats the ingenuity of the active alocholic!

I'm enjoying looking at it, that's for sure. We were overdue for a good dusting of the white stuff.

my postman works part-time as a party clown! i was at a kid's birthday party once and i kept looking at the clown and then it HIT ME - THAT CLOWN WAS MY MAILMAN!

I heard it was snowing in Baltimore too, I miss cold freaking winter. I used to put vodka in gatorade containers with food coloring & just cruise. Totally, irresponsible & only an alcoholic woud go thru such trouble.

There was another chapter to my Blizzard of '78 story. The next day, the schools were still closed, and the streets were slowly being cleared. Of course, the buried cars needed to be dug out before we could get them moving again.

The neighborhood kids were making the rounds with their snow shovels to earn a few bucks. I didn't have any ready cash; but, instead of offering them hot cocoa like my neighbors, I was "rewarding" them with shots of anisette. Needless to say, I was a pretty popular customer.

The very first meeting I ever went to I was so into my addiction I had said Gatorade bottle with me at my first meeting LORD I am still shocked that I DID THAT!

I'm pretty ashamed of that one (vodka-gatorade). I think I call it reckless abandon. & as for working for alcohol or grass, I used to do it all the time. Usually manual labor like chopping or stacking wood, painting etc. Drank or smoked the money away, a whole days work with nothing to show for but a buzz.

Upon reflection, I too cannot believe the extremes I went to obtain alcohol. Especially when I had to travel to so many different stores so as not to be noticed as a regular. (Small town, well known family.) Stores were miles and miles apart. What a relief to have that pressure off my back!--and I have so much more free time!

As recently as 6 weeks ago I was walking against gale force winds to reach my beloved 7-11 & the beer contained therein! Never thought a thing about the insanity of it - arrived back home soaked but happy with my prize.Took my dog out for a walk with the beer camouflaged in a coffee cup. Now, I can't even stand to take the dogs out for a brief walk in the wind and rain. Who was that crazy broad?! When I drank vodka, I used to hide my stash in an empty hairspray bottle under the sink. I had my own office in the hotel I worked at - which had been a hotel room - kept my supply of alcohol in the bathtub under some boxes. Very convenient. I'm sure no one noticed how sloshed I became by quitting time!

Wow. I thought that I was the only one who did that! Get sent home from work cause the weather was so bad and walk to the packy down the street. I actually went one time and they were closed!

I too used to make rounds to liqour stores, but really who was I kidding? Certainly not myself. Hiding liqour is absolutely absurd, I did it for quite sometime & eventually just did not care. It truly is an ignorantly, selfish disease. It does encourage one to build character, once the individual faces up to the challenge. Now the eyes of my peers are truly upon me as I move foreward with my life, everywhere I go. No longer do I turn away in shame but look friends and enemies in the eyes each time I speak to them. There is so much freedom in sobriety.

No snow, but I once biked 20 miles on a bike with a flat tire to get a drink. I was in the middle of nowhere upstate New York. At the time, I was actually proud of my dedication and athletic ability. I almost got heat stroke.

Isn't it funny how...once we get on a roll...those old memories start flooding back in that doorway to the past? "Will not regret the past, nor wish to shut the door on it."

And today a snowwhite landscape helps keep our memories green!

Each time I read another post here, it triggered another flashback to those "good old days". For instance...

When I worked at NJIT (formerly NCE), we, too, were let out early on a snowy day. Several of us drinking buddies got together, and immediately made for the closest bar in downtown Newark. The VP heard about it, and we were all "called on the carpet" the next day for violating their trust and partying instead of going straight home. Of course, our defense was they couldn't dictate to us what we did in our personal free time. (Talk about alcoholic arrogance!) But, they couldn't argue the point; and, I don't think they were so quick to close early after that.
