Craving of a Different Kind

Hi again,

I have now been sober for 2 weeks. The withdrawal was difficult. I wanted something so bad. To go out and buy it, hide it from everyone but I didn't. I now find that I'm craving carbonated drinks like mineral water, soda water or pop but I don't know why.

Anybody else experience this? I never drank much of this stuff before.

Depends what your withdrawing from. I hear opiates and alcohol make people crave sweets bigtime when coming off them.
Maybe just a replacement for the using?
Dont know.
Better that than whatever your DOC is.

Hey racer;
Ya, I too find that I crave carbonated things. I HATED soda water, until I tried to get sober. At first I thought I'd start drinking soda water and a slice of lime so that I FELT like I was having a drink around others. Now, I can't get enough of it. That and virgin ceasars, I drink a ton of those.
Anything is better than the booze!

Yes, I was a beer drinker mostly. I guess that's what it is-the carbonation. Water wasn't helping me. I wanted something that had "gas" in it. Thanks for the replies.

I've definitely been craving anything bubbly. Diet soda, mineral water, even regular soda (blech!) if there's nothing else. I was a beer drinker, so I chalked it up to the replacement thing.

mix lite cranberry juice and gingerale and drink that, its tart and good. I drink juice straight outta the gallon jug from the fridge, back and forth everytime just like I used w/t handle of skyy. EZDUZ it.

There could be a psychological substitution thing going on... There could also be a metabolism based substitution thing going on too.

Our bodies derive a lot of energy from breaking down alcohol. Its also easier to "unlock" that energy than it is to "unlock" the energy in regular food so we develop a "preference" for it at the cellular level. When we remove that "nearly free" source of energy (alcohol) our bodies want it back again.

Starting an exercise regime can be difficult at first -- "no pain, no gain". In a like manner, re-training our bodies to prefer the energy from regular food once again can be difficult at first too.

Stick with it. Your body will learn. I think you're probably just "in transition", as it were. The important thing is to keep moving forward with discipline and proper nutrition.

You are not alone.

Lots of good advice here.

I think that recovery can mean a whole new way of taking care of your body.
