Newbie Seeks Sober Book Advice
Newbie Seeks Sober Book Advice
I am an avid reader, and am thinking that a book or two on sobriety would be helpful to me in my renewed journey of recovery. I'm hoping that someone with a little experience could recommend a couple books.
I already own the AA big book.
I'm looking for something a little less AA-based. Something written by someone who was escaping from alcoholism. Something unique, not too technical, etc.
I once grabbed a book from the library about a girl and her experiences through college and beyond...and in the first couple chapters she describes herself as "not an alcoholic", "doesn't have the disease", etc. I threw the book down, thinking "You B*TCH! How dare you write a book like this without coming from the same desparate place so many of your readers inevitably have!"
So I feel like there are good books and bad. Please, someone, can you help me find a couple that are really effective?

I'm also an avid reader, I finish this book during my first wk of sobriety. I really like it, full of down to earth info, layman terminology.
"Getting Sober - A Practical Guide to Making Through the First 30 Days"
Author: Kelly Erlandson, LADC - who is in long term recovery.
I also like "under the Influence" but it can get technical - I haven't finish it yet.

A good friend of mine where I live wrote a book not too long ago and it seems to be doing pretty well. It is called "From Addiction To Miracle" The Author is Bill K. Now I bought the book when he came around to a meeting a while back. A lot of us bought his book and many have read it and says it is really good. I haven't made the time to read it yet. But that might be something?

The book that convinced me to quit
and contains much information is
"Under The Influence" by Milam & Ketcham
Ketcham has a sequel....I have not read it
"Beyond The Influence"
Both are usually carried by Amazon.

I LOVED "Drinking: A Love Story" by Caroline Knapp.
It's the book that gave me the hope that recovery was possible.
I think it's a brutally honest description of her life as a high-functioning alcoholic.

Dry. By Augustine Burrows. Based on his alcoholism and experience with finding sobriety.
I also enjoyed his book Running with Scissors a good one for anyone who thinks their childhood was a little tough. This book is based on his actual childhood quite interesting. Made me appreciate my dysfunctional childhood....lol

Dry was an AWESOME read, well written, I got a gift card for Borders and I plan on getting "Running with scissors".
As far as escaping alcoholism the personal stories in the back of the BB are hard to beat, if one does not read close to thier own story there I would be shocked.

Book that is working for me
Try Willpower's Not Enough - Recovering Addictions of Every Kind. by Arnold Washton. It was written in the 80's (I didn't know that when I bought it) however, still relates. It's helped me to understand more WHY I have an addiction.
Hope it helps.

A sad, but true story Terry:my daughter's life-and-death struggle with alcoholism by George McGovern. Check out this helpful link Terry, My Daughter's Life-and-Death Struggle with Alcoholism
Thank you for your input everybody!!! It's greatly appreciated-- looks like I have a few new books to pick up, huh?
