I say this almost every time I see this topic come up.
It usually starts a good bit of flack , but I feel it's worth saying again.

As a bartender, for six years, full time sometimes way MORE than that -

100% of the people who came in my bar who tried drinking the 'nonalcohol' beer -
went back to drinking.

100%.

I tended a fairly dang busy bar.
I watched.
100%.

Just something to think about.

No sense playing with matches if you're not ready for a fire, right?

To each thier own, for me non-alcoholic beverages that are meant as a replacement for an alcoholic beverage are the equivelant to a blow up doll for a sex addict, it ain't the real thing so it can't hurt right?

There are only 5 million other beverages out there in the world, why in the world would I, an alcoholic, drink a fake alcoholic beverage unless I wanted to try the good old days without the pain?

I wonder if they make alcohol free vodka?
yes, they do. Some call it .. water.

Sorry. It was just laying there, saying - "kick me kick me"...

Dave47 -
the thing (little known factoid, or whatever) that got to ME when I got sober was ... learning that several of my favorite VINEGARS also contained alcohol.

Bummed.
me.
out.

Then I found out about mouth washes,
cough suppressants ... and so on and so on.
BBQ sauces
(that DON'T have whiskey labels right on the front)

It's a whole new world, huh?

SOMEwhere, there was a listing of commercial items that contained trace amounts and even sizeable %'s of alcohol ... anyone know what happened to that? I remember printing one out when I first got sober.

Hi Barb, i did read once about someone who was addicted to drinking mouthwash and cough medicines(scary). With wine vinegars containing small traces of alcohol is that why bbq sauces can contain it as well?
I'm not going to get paranoid about this, if it's obvious to me i won't have it but it just goes to show that it's a minefield out there. Many thanks, off to check the cupboards now-for curiosity purposes only of course.

dave -

I think that's a good 'tude, actually. I mean, I wanted to know if something was going to trigger me, but I was so early in sobriety ... I didn't know WHAT was going to (trigger) so I wanted all the information I could get my hands on.

Also because of the saying,
"put as much time and effort into your recovery as you did into your drinking."

I think it's great you want to know. And I'm still interested in what you find out.

I like to watch people cook.
I don't necessarily cook, myself, per se -
I just like to watch on tv and stuff.

I was stunned ... at how much of tv programming shows cooking with booze.

I'm used to it now - but .. wow. At first .. geez.

My absolute favorite dining-out meal is veal scallopini marsala...I know the alcohol is burned off in the cooking, and only the flavor is left. Plus, I never drank a glass of marsala wine in all my 32 years of drinking...so, I don't feel any "trigger danger" there. Matter of fact, if I can ever save up enough to have it delivered to the nursing home from an excellent Italian restaurant, I think I'll treat myself in this New Year!
