Thank you Karen. The local number connects to someone's cell phone.
One thing I don't understand is why there aren't any meetings in my area and why the phone isn't manned at prime drinking times - Fri-Sat evenings....

The cell phone IS the person manning the phones for AA. This way no one has to go into an "office" just to take AA calls,and they rotate who takes the calls so its not too much of a burden. We are all volunteers afterall.
