The simple gifts of AA...
Hello my friends,
This is the first Thanksgiving holiday that I have been sober in three years... ...My two sons are spending the day with their father, and so I could be alone...
I don't have to be alone anymore...
I went to a meeting last night, and a kind elderly man is making Thanksgiving dinner for all those that have no where to go...I was invited and I am so grateful..
How awesome is this??
Wishing all a great day...:morning

This was also my 1st Thanksgiving sober too. I spent it with my family and all of my neices and nephews. It was wonderful. It sounds like you had a good Thanksgiving too. Sobriety is definitely the easier softer way.

We had 1 group in our area that had Thanksgiving lunch from noon until 5 and another one that started at 6 and ran until 8 followed by a meeting!
I am on the "Alcathon" committee for our area this year, this is an event that starts at noon on the 23rd of Dec. and runs 24 hours a day through noon on the 26th. So many new to sobriety need a safe place to go over the Holidays and we do what we can, there is food and beverages 24 hours a day, meetings 24 hours a day, fellowship, activities for kids, 8 speakers, one from Alanon, raffles for the Grapevine and a Christmas dinner on Christmas day.
All are welcome, the drunk and sober, the homeless and the rich.
No one has to be alone!
BTW your post brought a tear to my eye, I still recall the loneliness of when I was drinking....... my solution then was to drink it away, drown it in a bottle, today I am no longer lonely and seek out those in need of company hoping I can be the hand of AA that reached out and saved me when I was drowning in a sea of loneliness for someone else.
Happy for you Missy
Hi Missy, so glad your Thanksgiving turned out nice. This was my first sober Thanksgiving in many years. I used to make excuses when someone invited me to dinner so I could stay home and drink. Yesterday I actually cooked and had my family over to my house! I felt so proud. With the continued help and grace of my HP and my AA group I look forward to many more sober holidays. GH

This was the first year I was spending Thanksgiving in a nursing home; so, it was the first without family members around me...first I didn't cook for my family, too. I really had to work hard on keeping a positive attitude; but, I got through it without having a major meltdown.
I'm so glad to hear areas of AA are reaching out to those who might be spending the holidays by themselves. I remember telling the very first girl I sponsored, "You don't ever have to feel alone again." That was 28 years ago, and thank goodness AA still flourishes. Plus, we have the added bonus of SR...we are indeed blessed.
