Popping in on out of town AA
Popping in on out of town AA
Well, I was cranky because I slept through this morning's AA (the one with the free breakfast, mmm, eggs) ..in fact slept until 5pm.
I had the shakes pretty bad, and was full of anxiety and wasn't going to go tonight, but I went, and I'm glad I did.
While there, we had a guest introduce himself, a fella from Wyoming.
He came up here for Pheasant Hunting (I live smack in the middle of SD, and we have very good pheasant hunting, this year expected to be the best in close to a decade), and one of the first things he did was look up the local AA and drop in to sit in on the meeting. He had some good things to say too, I was glad he was there.
I'm still quite new to recovery, and I wonder..does this happen often, with people who are pretty solid and have some time behind them/you? Do you check out the local AA scene when you are travelling out of town?
It made me feel kind of good thinking about it, that anywhere I go, chances are I can find an AA there and not feel 'alone.'

I don't have much sober time behind me yet, but I make sure I look up the local AA whenever I'm traveling out of town. I've met some nice folks and always sorta felt like I was 'home'. I'll definitely continue doing this.

Yes...I always check out meetings when traveling.
In Las Vegas, I called the AA Intergroup to find
the nearest meeting to my hotel.
"Ok...let me check...ummm
Gay Lesbian or Tranny?"
"Er...Ah...No... just a drunk"
He sent me to the T.I.E. Club
I went there daily and had a grand time!
Blessings

AA is full of friendss not yet met
I plan on checking out the AA meetings in Texas next year when i go out there to visit my parents. We get visitors at my local meetings too sometimes. My first week back we had a woman visiting from Florida. I personal think its neat meeting people from other states that are in recovery.

Congrats on sticking with it Anodyne -
Over here in MT =- I can relate and yes - were I ever to leave town - I'd check out other meetings. Also - here, there's surrounding area towns so small that, in the summer, people get in the car from here and drive to their meetings.
I usually enjoy when out of towners come here. Fresh perspective and all that.

Hi and welcome to your new life!
We have many visitors at the meetings I go to b/c I live close to Nasa. I love to go to meetings when I am out of town.
It is a great feeling knowing that I do not have to be alone.

Good thing they allow just plain old drunks too!
Many places have clubhouses where meetings are held.
They usually have several different groups ...some
have snack bars and child care/play rooms.
Those are called Anon Clubs and have specific names.
T.I.E. stands for Take It Easy.
Ours is Unity House.
I also have been a member of the How Club
and the Flat Rat Alley Club in D.C.
(yes...we met in a city allleyway)
In Pensacola I was in the Warrington Club.
The track House is next to a railroad.
Just as AA groups do...each club takes a
vote on the designated title.
Probably more than you ever wanted to know

I don't know if ours has a title.
Just. AA.
And NA is in the same building, I think.
But we have people who come to our AA and are potheads or addicts.
We're not such a big town, so I think most just go to the AA place.

I still go to open AA or Al-Anon meetings when I'm out of town. It's always amazing to see AA/Al-Anon operating where ever I go. And the people are usually friendly and generous.
I have a friend who is almost a year sober, but if he doesn't go to AA meetings 3 or 4 times a day, he literally freaks out. (Obviously he has problems beyond alcoholism.) I have stuff to do in Chicago every month and he's come with me a few times. After dealing with the freak out during trip #1, I just drop him at The Mustard Seed (the hub of Chicago's AA community) for the day and we're both happy.
You'd think he'd want to see the city as Chicago is a fun place to visit, but nope. He just wants to go to meetings. They do have have some pretty good meetings at the Mustard Seed.

i went to an out of town alanon meeting last weekend. i was visiting my mom and her church was preparing for a spagetti dinner. i had to deliver a cake there in the morning for the eve event. when i walked into the church, i saw everyone coming in with their books, so i figured what the heck, i'm going... it was a lovely group. one of the women there actually lives near my mom on her lake and came over later in the day to my mom's for a glass of iced tea and a boatride. and she and i will email and stay in touch now - she has a son around my daughter's age with similar addiction issues. it was a great experience. i'm glad i went!
