Hi everybody

I'm new here guys/gals, here's a bit of background.

I'm 30 years old and an alcoholic. I've been drinking heavily for about 12 years and it has cost me everything; my long-term girlfriend, my place at university, several jobs, places I've been staying. You name it, I've probably lost it through drink at some point or other.

I have only came to terms with the fact that I am an alcoholic recently and I really want to do something about it now before it kills me. It scares me.

I can go a couple of weeks without a drink sometimes and feel like I am doing really well and then I think 'ah what the hell, 1 won't do any harm' and then it continues for days on end. Then when I don't get a drink I get anxious, pulse starts racing, sweats and panic attacks and the cycle begins anew.

Just can't face the initial detox stage and every time I do it (and stop for a couple days) I feel better and promise myself I'll not put myself through that hell again - but a week later I'm like 'what the hell, 1 wont hurt' again.

Anyway that's my story.

Have you a sympathetic doctor you can talk too? have an overhaul and get some advice on your drink problem...it doesn't go away and you're right if we don't stop we die. Sobriety rocks. Welcome to SR lots of support here.

Hi RK

I am also an alcoholic. It sounds like you have the strenghth you need if you are able to abstein for a couple of weeks at a time. You just need to get the support and encouragement you need to keep your recovery going. You have found a good place here for that. You will find get a lot of good advice and find your experience with alcohol is not unique to you. You are not alone!

Good luck Keep posting and let us know how you get on.

Too scared to go to the docs at the mo, but I've made my mind up to attend my first AA meeting on Sunday. It's the first time I've thought about going so will just be along to see what it's like.

Hi RK. I found I couldn't stay stopped without help too.

I have a great social life in AA, lots of fun and working the programme has taken away my desire to drink. I hope you will have a good experience with your first meeting. Sometimes we have to go to several until we find a nice comfortable one.

If you have a desire to stop drinking and you keep an open mind and listen for similarties, you will be well on your way to recovery.

Welcome to SR!

The problem that I had is that I could never get enough of anything. I find that true sometimes in my recovery as well. Yeah I am a addict that has obsessive/compulsive behavior.

Glad that you are here and as long as we are staying clean for today, we all must be doing something right. Why fix something that isn't broke?

Welcome aboard!

Hi RK,

I don't have any pearls of wisdom to offer. Just wanted to send encouraging thoughts your way. Reading this forum has helped me stop drinking for 6 days. Amazing! I am actually enjoying my morning because I am not hungover.

Keep posting

Hang in there. You in for a bit of a ride for a while.
Anything you can do to occupy yourself, divert your attention - other than posting of course

I find going for long walks helps manage the intense cravings that just dont want to let go.

Thank you both so much, you've no idea what it means to know people are there that know what it's like going through this today.

Reubena, hang in there 6 days is amazing - believe me you don't want to be where I am today, so bear that in mind lol.
