Im looking around and there are things that I do when Im drunk. One of my faverite things is too listen to music loud and was wondering as I dont listen to music much when Im sober weather i should get rid of all the music. I actualy spoke to steph ( our Pilgrim) and thanks Steph you where a real help. I found the date of our local AA meeting its this Tuesday so theres no excuse I know the day.

I don't know if it's possible for me to get rid of all the triggers ang, but AA and the 12 Steps give me the tools to cope with them. I guess it sort of lessens the effect they used to have.

Why not put the "drunk" music on mute for awhile?
I did that to my collection of Jazz
as it made me yearn for the ambeince.

I still enjoyed other types....:)

Give it a break if it's a trigger for you right now Ang... just don't listen to it. Personally I wouldn't get rid of any of my music collection as I feel that music is healing even though I've done my share of listening while drunked up. I've never found it to be a problem for me. Maybe in time you can get back to it :).

personally, I think if listening to music is something you like to do when you're already drunk, it's not a trigger Ang. Triggers are the things that..well..trigger the initial impetus to get wasted.

I used to watch TV when I was drunk, but watching it other times never made me want to drink (well, ok being awake made me want to drink, but that's beside the point....)

gawd if i got rid of all the triggers in my life, i might as well not live!! hahaha...everyday i drive by the bistro that i used to hang out, or the liquor store i used to buy wine from, or talk to my best friends that i loved to drink with, or the problems at work "that made me drink" ahahhaah...for me and just for me, triggers were nothing but excuses to drink!! once i recognized that alcohol was the problem and not the solution, those things i called triggers really dont bother me anymore!! now instead i come on here, call my spons, go to a meeting, or if i cant do any of the above i take a time out and say the third step prayer!!

Can someone say "husband"... :hypnotize ? Gotta work with those triggers sometimes.

Anna 08-29-2007 06:24 PM

Yeah, I think it's some of both. Clearly for me, I cannot get rid of all the triggers. My biggest trigger was being alone. So, I had to work with that. But, maybe changing the type of music you're listening to for awhile would help.

Hi,

I enjoy music better sober...I actually understand most of what I am hearing..Plus, I don't make an a** out of myself on the dance floor...

Jules62 08-29-2007 07:07 PM

ang-don't throw out your music! I can't live without it myself.

Maybe just don't play the stuff that you associate with drinking for a while?

Glad you spoke to Steph :)

I'm thinking of you,

Julesxox

Hi Ang! Always happy to read your posts and to look at the little one. :)

I'm actually using music to help me beat this and to lift my spirits or get me to thinkin' a bit -- motivational stuff you might say.

Some of my favorites right now...
Hallelujah (Rufus Wainwright, Jeff Buckley or k.d. Lang version -- I have them all)
Tracy Chapman: Change, Be and Be not Afraid, All That You Have Is Your Soul
Joan Osborne: One of Us
The Poozies: Another Train

There's a wonderful thread on this very forum that touches on this... I don't really know how to copy it, though. :(

Anyway -- Turn the music into ammunition, a tool, a means of beating this, Ang!

Hugs to you way over there across the water...

I don't like to listen to songs that have drinking in them. It may be that some or many of the songs you have glorify drinking and that could be a trigger for you.

scaredykat 08-29-2007 09:26 PM

For me being a housewife I did everything drunk. My cleaning, cooking, reading, sewing, video games, music, you name it. Personal though i did stop drinking Coke-a-cola for a while because that was my drink of choice with rum. Also the song by George Thorogood "I drink alone". I don't listen to that anymore. Because that was me.
