Holy caffine and sweets!!!
Holy caffine and sweets!!!
I stopped drinking 3 weeks ago but I can put down some coffee and snickers. I had no idea this would happen. I guess I'm just shifting my addiction to something else? I'm not going overboard but I do stop and grab a monster energy drink on the way home instead of a beer. I don't HAVE to have one, but I sure have been enjoying them lately. The sweets are funny too. I never have really liked sweets, we're talking a piece of candy a month here. But now, I have been enjoying after lunch and after dinner "treats". Kinda funny how that has transferred.
Hopefully i won't become a chocoholic. My wife thinks its great and just laughs. I don't gorge myself but she gets a chuckle out of it because I've never been this way. Anyone else experience anything like this?

Yes, totally! I never used to have chocolate much but now I have it every day.
I didnt used to drink coffee much either but I have started having too much of that lately.
I need to cut down on the coffee but I am not concerned about the chocolate, plus I am enjoying it too much.!
Beats drinking right?

When we used to 12-Step alcoholics, we would always suggest they have a supply of hard candies available...I'm pretty sure it had something to do with the sugar-withdrawal coming off the alcohol. They tried to discourage caffeine in rehab; but, regular coffee became a "must have", as soon as we were able to get it!
Maybe it's trading one addiction for another, but I never heard of anyone getting stopped for a DUIC (driving under the influence of chocolate).

Ha ha Glass so true! My brother actually said this one time that he has never gone pee so much in his life from all the caffeine he downs! He too said he would rather be doing that as well as the alternative too!
I made a cake for him for his birthday (a man who never ate sweets until he started to become sober!) he had 3 pieces!!
Good for you guys! Sweets Sweets I say that beats the drink hand over fist!

Parentrecovers, as weird as it sounds I was intensely grateful when I started peeing again. I was so close to kidney failure that I would drink massive amounts of alcohol and hardly ever pee. Instead I was swelling up and turning all kinds of funky colors. When I started to pee a lot I knew my kidneys were starting to function again and I was so very grateful. Weird thing to be thankful for but it beats the hell out of the alternative.
As for sweets, yes it is very normal. I have been told that chocolate ice cream is one of the best things ever for alcohol cravings. I'm lactose intolerant so I didn't get to try it but I did have lots of chocolate, lots of caffeine and lots of cigarettes when I was sobering up. I would abuse my body and not eat for 4 or 5 days at a time so I also did a lot of eating after I got sober.
Anyway, as they say, this too shall pass. Don't stress about it even if you put on a few pounds (unless you are in danger of needing to be airlifted from the window ROFLMAO!). You can address those pounds later. As long as you don't drink, you are doing yourself a huge favor.
Take care,
Kellye

Wow.. thanks for sharing everyone. I'm glad I'm not the only one that could clear out Willy Wonka's chocolate factory in under an hour. Gotta be some technical reason for it. I haven't really liked sweets my entire life. Can't get enough of them.. in fact.. hold on... (chew, grown with delight, swallow snickers)... ahhh

I am so happy to see this post! I have been eating a lot of sweets myself. I even dated a pastry chef for 3 years and never even came close to eating the amount of chocolate I have eaten recently in that 3 years. I have never liked chocolate ice cream though.....maybe now is the time to try it again. My current sweet tooth favorites are Lindt Lindor Ball Truffles. I have 4 bags (white chocolate, 2 milk chocolate, and a dark chocolate). YUM!
