Hi Guy -

Maybe I missed this, but ....

liquor converts to sugar in the system. Beer converts to sugar, also , but the yeasts make it some other kind of sugar. When we quit, then, all the little brain dealies that WERE getting their 'pleasure triggers' ... suddenly ... aren't.

So we crave sweets - and usually, not the 'wholesome, nutritious' and all those OTHER words that make my brain go blank.
Words like ... organic ... natural ... zzzzz..

As a bartender - I can tell ya - a beer drinker - you cant usually SHOVE sugar down their throats when they're in the depth of their disease. That's who the pretzels and popcorn on the bar in the bowls are for.

Liquor drinkers - will usually drink all night - AND eat sugar, too.
That's who the gum, life savers, and reese's bars behind the bar are for. Then follow that with jerkey, or if it's a hard core bar, the pickled eggs or the ... turkey gizzards.

It's to do with how each's preference is controlled by their body's capacity to do the conversion. Alcohol is 'treanslated' as sugar, but .. isn't - it's in that under the influence book too.

Now add the presence of mixers like sodas (which the brown colorings convert to the 'bad' sugar - ask any diabetic ...) and juices, ... and so on and so on ...
ok -
so that's the 'splains ...
just worded more like if Homer Simpson was a doctor ... LOL

yeah, man...notrmal as normal can be....and yes, it does have to do with the sugar withdrawal. Alcohol is digested as sugar so we were getting overloaded and then suddenly stopped the constant sugar supply. Regarding the other...I think that perhaps it is not only the caffiene..but the coffee itself -- coffee is a beverage that is recognized as a social "experience" not just a drink. This is certainly also true of alcohol. And it satisfies the oral fixation as well.....

My current sweet tooth favorites are Lindt Lindor Ball Truffles. I have 4 bags (white chocolate, 2 milk chocolate, and a dark chocolate). YUM!
Oh, my, Bjork...you really have a problem (as I sit here munching on dark chocolate M&M's).

Thanks for the education, Barb. As a 75 year old confirmed chocoholic, I figure I gave up drinking, cigarettes, and sex...enough is enough!

Heyy, I'm glad I read this thread. I've been on holiday this week with no computer access so been a bit dumbfounded why I cant seem to stop stuffing chocolate in my mouth all the time. Now I know!
Not gong to do anything about it right now though. Staying away from the booze is good enought for me

Hey Barb, how are things?

Just sitting here contemplating whether to mow the lawn, put up a shelf or lounge around in front of the TV for a couple of hours. I feel the TV calling me ....

Set coffee pot up at night so it's avail upon awakening.

Bring 24 oz coffee to work.

Eat snickers bar for morning break.

Drat, drank all the coffee, so I get a Coke.

Have lunch.

Get 24 oz dark roast coffee on way back to work.

You get the idea...

Anyhow, I have been getting pineapples lately and cubing them up. I find that pineapple chunks seem as good as candy (and are easier to digest).

Ted

Also, IIRC, caffeine stimulates the release of whatever raises our blood sugar level, just like booze.

Oh man.
When I got sober an old timer told me that if I felt like drinking go to Friendlies and order a large chocolate shake. If you still feel like drinking after you have finished it, have another.
I listened. Went to the doctor one day because I thought I was going blind.
""You're diabetic," he told me. "What the heck have you been eating?!!?"
The good thing... if I was still drinking I'd be in rough shape. The bad thing... reading this thread is driving me nuts... I want candy!!!
