3rd Day going mad
3rd Day going mad
Hi everyone
I started drinking again a few months back. Four weeks ago I quit smoking, and 3 days ago I quit drinking. This time quitting drinking, from the mental standpoint, is much harder. Am wondering if it is because I dont have the smoking crux. I feel as if I either need to have a drink or a cigarette, or both otherwise I will go mad. Physically I am fine, no shakes, nothing. I am taking it one hour at a time.
Any suggestions? I don't have any medication. Have already been for a very long walk. Gone out to several pubs and drank orange juice.

Hi and Welcome,
I think each time you stop gets more and more difficult. The disease picks up where you left off and so it gets harder.
It sounds like you're doing well physically and all I can suggest is to keep busy and try to occupy yourself. Do things you enjoy doing, as much as possible and hang in there. It will begin to get better soon!

Thanx
I just went out for a walk and had a magnum ice cream - very nice. I will try those sunflower seeds.
Craving seems to have gone; funny how the third day is worse than the first two days.

I like another analogy I just read on this board the other day ... forget whose it was, but I've already shared it with my meeting:
"Just because you got the monkey off your back ... doesn't mean the circus has left town".
I also highly advise staying out of bars/pubs/casinos for awhile. I think everyone here is going to agree on this point ... People, places, things that remind us of drinking/using are to be avoided in recovery, ESPECIALLY early on. Don't go unless you absolutely HAVE TO, and in that case, try to go with someone who knows of your alcohol problem and that you feel somehow accountable to... That's my best advice.

Great, thanks for that. It really got me through what I could only describe as a bit of a psychotic feeling - you know, how it must feel when the shrink has just zapped you with the electrodes. I feel mentally exhausted and am now going to bed to get a good sleep.
Yes, but when I have a cigarette I feel like a drink; and when I have a drink I feel like a cigarette. But I reckon you are right.
Thanks - I don't think I would be on day 4 now if it wasn't for this forum. Almost cracked yesterday. It really does help to be able to post to an audience that understands. In a weird way, talking and analysing a craving sort of makes it dissappear. Am working from home today so should be stress free and will concentrate on keeping it calm.
