The Shoe Store

You know, being an alcoholic an a addict in recovery is not an easy task, especially when it comes time to go buy another pair of shoes.
There’s lot’s to choose from.
We have the Two-Tone Wing-Tips. When I tried them on, I was put into the nightlife days, high-class, to sleezy-cheesy bars and clubs… booze, drugs, women, get’n one over on another. Being something I was not…
Now i tried on the Slippers. They didn’t make me ready for lounging , nor bedtime. They made me feel like saying, Hey! One drink wont hurt, you can handle it. You have some time, its all out of your system, go for it, if you cant handle it, just put it down. Problem with that, if I put it down, then I have to pick it up again, then put it down… I may, or may not be able too, and here goes the Merry go Round of addiction again.
Well, now I tried on a pair of Sneakers, Woe!-Bruth’a! I didn’t feel like run’n a marathon, nor taking a nice long walk. I felt like going underground. Again, I have some time in, why not just keep going to meetings, working with my sponser, and having a few Belts now and then… who would know? I can keep up the charade as long as no one gets hurt or finds out… A few Breath Mints? “Certs Certs, Two Mints in One”
Now, I wondered about the shoe store a bit more, found a nice shiny pair of Loafers, not the kind you put the penny in… A sleek kinda GQ look’n pair… real snazzy… I tried them on and Cripes! What a rush… whats the matter with you Nit-Wit, you go to meetings every night, you do lots of service work, you work on these things called steps, you get on your tired worn down kness every day and night, you give people rides, go on outgoings, make coffee, call other alky’s and addicts, call the guy you call Big Foot, a sponser he’s called… for what, you have time, you know what to do, just not pick up a drink or a drug. Wad’a you waisting all this time for? You can be watching TV, chasing girls, going to the movies, night clubs, playing golf, tennis, Yuk! ect, ect, ect.!you don’t need anything other then don’t drink or drug… Wow! Get these things off my feets real fast… no lik’y! they made me feel miserable!
As I was stil paroooooooooz’n the shoe store, I came across a pair of plain Brown Shoes, you know the kind George Gobal talk’d about on the old Jonny Carson show, his great line. “ Did you ever feel like the world was a tuxedo and you were a pair of brown shoes? “ I put these things on and they felt pretty good, kind’a calming, relaxing, they made me feel serene. They put a smile on my face, made me laugh! I liked them, wrap um I said to the salesman. Please toss in some polish so I may keep them in good shape.

As i'm wearing these shoes, they are helping to keep me on the right path to recovery, keeping me doing that next right thing to a happy, joyous and somewhat fear free new life.

So my friends in recovery, what kind of shoes do you all like? Me, I will stick to the Brown Shoes.

oh rusty, you made me cry. my dad wore brown shoes. they were real humble shoes, and he always kept them shined up with new sturdy laces. when he passed away, my mom buried him in his black dress shoes (which i had to shine before they were placed on his feet and hidden in the bottom of his casket). but she let us put his old faithful brown ones in with him, for another day.

remember when the pope died - he had on simple brown shoes at his viewing...

got me all choked up.

(me - i'm a flip flop and house shoe gal - built for comfort, not speed - one day at a time)

What a great post, RZ, some awesome thoughts.

I wear Merrell hiking shoes or Adidas trail runners, they've served me well the past 7 months, as I continue to "trudge the road of happy destiny". And they hold up well as I persevere in service work.

I wear codie shoes....shoes that fit _me_ , and I wear them to do what I need to do. On some rare days I wear vintage shoes. I have some from the 20's to the 60's....they have style that can't be found in any retail shoestore. They are treasures tested by time, comfy and still look pretty good.

On a typical day if I'm not barefoot, I'll be wearing comfy casual sandals, but all my shoes have one thing in common these days: they are suited for my needs- not just for 'show' or the demands of fashion.
btw...Hello, my name is cmc....I am a shoeaholic, thanks for letting me share.

A member in the fellowship over here is called 'School Shoes Bob'

Guess why - lol

Yep he wears what are considered School shoes all the time.

Either Doc Martins or Black buckle over shoes.

Actually rusty I have plain brown shoes as well

I also wear a pair of runners and a pair of MBT shoes.

In summer I go barefoot as much as I can or wear thongs (flip flops)

Kevin

PS Tobi and Rana wear the highly fasionable Sharp Claws, usually caked in grass and dirt

love shoes stories RZ

Came full circle. Wearing work boots again today.
I get them from the wal mark for $60
They're don't last too long in . Shose don't last too long in the
the line of work i do. They safe my feet from mud, water, concrete,
asphat and god knows what else i'll step on during the day.lol
I like them thou. I'm just slip them on in the morning when i'm
half asleep and water or whatever esle can't in them if I need
to get dirty. I get another pair after they wear out in 3-4 months.
I still like wearing VANS for sneakers thou.

Still have office shoes somewhere in boxes, i dont miss them today thou.

Use to wear black high top sneaker convers with my school uniform
as a kid...yeap..i dressed just like angus and went to an all boys school.

In my teenage years..i started waering OFF the WALL VANS..lol

Started wearing my Issued combat boots and 501 everywhere when i join
the service because I spent all my moola partying ...years later it trun into a fad..lol what da ???
My ex wife put me in Justin and wrangler after i got married..lol

Got some ass kicking Justins work boots or red wings when i was working
at the power plant. I started using the higher powder for power and came
into recovery witn ass kicking boots. Then settle down and started raising
a family and wore penny loafers, dockers, and a neck tie to work..lol

life and recovery is a trip..here I am with boots on again..
progress not prefection...they're only half ass kicking boots this time..lol

I have all kinds of shoes but I prefer to go barefooted as much as possible even in winter I only wear shoes if it is unacceptable not to like at work or to go into a store or something. Oh I wear my riding boots when on the bike though wouldn't want my feet to get hurt or burnt...

Splendra..please wear boots when ridin' that bike! When I was in high school

I rode with my boyfriend everywhere barefooted. We stopped at a rest stop..and did

what teens do...he bent me over backwards for a kiss..and sizzled my ankle on the

exhaust pipe..it took 3 weeks to heal up.

So, please wear yer boots!

Love,

IO

I like to wear "thongs" in the summer or sandels. I'm very casual. Runners or ankle boots in the winter.

I'm a barefooter, too.

*just as I am*

now it's summer, so it's my trusty 'berkenknockoffs' - just as it comes. I notice I've got the whole 'Grateful Dead' flowing skirt thing going on this summer. That fits, too. LOL

but most all the time - my roper boots ... of course! I'm a boot person, too.
And that fits the recovery thing for me, Rusty - horse trainers live in their boots. It's their work - it's their passion - it;'s their life.
So ... I'm usually wearing boots.

It's just too dang hot right now - and they look stupid with skirts. Yet another fashion boundary - no tie dye for Barb.
