What should I expect or what is expected of me?
I'm sorry it didnt work out for you. Maybe you can try AA too.
I went to my meeting tonight and thought they where not there either. Turns out you have to go in the back door of the church now. I got to see some people I haven't seen in years. They remembered me too.

Sorry, I should've read this post before I called you out on the other one for not going.
MY BAD, please forgive me. I'm proud of you for trying in any case.
If AA is the only thing close by DO THAT by ALL MEANS. I'm an addict, not an alcoholic, and I go to more AA than NA by far for the same reason as you describe ... none remotely nearby (though when I travel I look for NA first because I do prefer those meetings usually, but it's very very very similar...)
Don't even bat an eye about walking into AA and saying "Addict/Alcoholic" even if you feel drugs are your main problem rather than alcohol. IT'S ALL DRUGS, and alcoholics ARE ADDICTS TOO. Don't forget that, don't be shy about AA in any way. You are just as welcome there as an addict as you are at NA. It's just that all the literature focuses on booze instead of drugs, but all you do is make the mental substitution in your own mind, and the experience becomes virtually identical... I do it ALL THE TIME, so I know it can be done. Easily, even, since it's ME we're talking about here ... and I'm ALL ABOUT the EASY.
Some AA meeting I've been to have more people saying "addict/alcoholic" and "addict" than saying "alcoholic". It just depends on the meeting, really. And SO MANY AA'ers that say "alcoholic" when you hear them introduce themselves, will then go on to mention "using <drugs>" as being part and parcel with their drinking experience. I would say there are probably at least as many addict/alcoholics as 'pure' alcoholics even in an AA meeting. Especially if you were to just look at the 'under 50' crowd in the rooms.
