"I lose things when I drink. (pause) Houses, cars, wifes & jobs...."

But you know what, the few drinking occasions I've been to, no-one asked. And if they did, it was just curiosity. "Did you give up the sauce ?" ," You're not drinking tonight ?". I explained no, I had to quit drinking, it causes problems, and they go on their merry way.

It's nobody's business why I don't drink. If I were not an alcoholic, I wouldn't give two seconds to worrying about what others might think of me not having an alcoholic beverage. I usually bring a 6 pack of gingerale or Perrier and say 'no thanks' to any booze that's offered. If some numbskull persists in offering me a drink as the event progresses, I might hit him in the shins with what's left of the 6-pack.

So far I have simply said not thanks without any other explanation and that has been enough.

(P.S. There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY in my profession I can say "I am a recovering alcoholic".)
Isn't it sad, that in this so-called "enlightened age", there is still such a stigma attached to the word alcoholic? But, it is what it is. Personally, I think people fear the word because they're afraid they might have to take a long, hard look at themselves and their own drinking.

My only suggestion would be to keep it simple: "Thanks, but I just don't feel like drinking tonight." If they persist, "Maybe later....but, thanks, anyway." I bet...unless they're a bunch of insensitive idiots...they'll eventually either get the idea, or just quit offering.
