TOPIC: Were You Under The Influence Of Alcohol Or Drugs While Driving? What Happened?
Hi my name is Sharon and Im an Alcoholic.
By the Grace of my HP and people like
you here in SR I havent had a drink of
Alcohol since 8-11-90.
For that and you I am truely grateful.
Today we see so many commercials on
tv reminding us not to drink and drive.
They show us the end results of these
fatal accidents when an innocent person
or persons are killed because of negligence.
How often did you drink and drive? or
used or was stoned and still drove ur
car?
Were u alone? Did you have friends or
family with you? Where were you going
or coming back from when u were drunk
or high?
Did you always make it home safe and sound?
Did you have close calls? Did you get hurt
in an accident or hurt someone else?
Did you get pulled over, get a ticket, have
a field sobriety test, did you get off with
a warning?
Did you learn from your mistakes and do you
have a message to share with others about
drinking, using and driving?

Here's my story...
Sure i use to drink and drive....
I recall in my very early drinking career
that i did drink while driving....Id have
a beer on a Friday afternoon to begin
the weekend,,,,Party time began....
Then times id go get groceries and
have my cold beer in the front
seat with me....hurrying home to
only slam on my breaks and have beer
bottles rolling around the floor.
Then drink with friends before heading
out to joy ride....stopping at the store
to get more liquor....
Later drinking enough on an empty stomach
to only throw up on my date in a club....
Or having the driver pull over to let me hang
my head out the car and throw up....
Or have my tall cup of wine to drink before
getting to the club to save on buying too
much there....
Driving up the wrong way of the road or
hwy.... driving irratical....
Racing my car at a light with another car.
Hitting a concrete culvert sitting on top the
ground after my wheel hit a 2 ft notch cut
out in the road that i didnt see.
No...i never got a DWI......I almost killed my ownself
tho and thank God no one else....
I was crazy to drink and drive....totally out
of control...
Thank God I dont do that any longer....
Now its wondering who else is out there
like i was waiting to hurt or kill someone .

What happened? My Higher Power was with me, and I was verrrrrry lucky...not to have hurt myself or anyone in my path. For many years before I actually had a license and a car, I took cabs to and from the bars...but, once I started driving, it never stopped me from getting behind the wheel while under the influence.
Right now, I'm "driving" an electric wheelchair on which I have an AA bumper sticker glued to the back:

My last 2 years, I had a constant .25 or above BAL. Friends, family, my kids, your kids....yup.
When I got caught, I went to jail and paid my fines.
I'm not proud of it. But it's more common than some want to admit to.

Sharon..You always come up with good make you think topics.
Unfortunately I we would probably have to go to a part 2 on this thread if I were to answer all those questions in detail.
Lets just say yes to all of them for me.
All the time.
But I will share one story that I will never forget and to this day am so ashamed and thankful the outcome wasnt worse.
This is when I lived in NC and it happened about 7 or 8 years ago.
We had just moved back to Florida from NC. But I had court dates in NC. So me and my grams drove my brand new mustang I worked so hard to get back to NC for court.
Well I hadnt smoked in probably a month. So as soon as we got there you know i was right back in the hood hanging with the homies.
I had 3 court dates in a weeks time. 5 day period.
I smoked for 7 days strait. Made it to every court date...High as hell. but I made it.
Did not sleep one bit the whole 7 days.
The 5th day and last court date I was so tired I nodded off and my head slammed into the benches in front of me. Its kinda funny but not. I use to put those little butterfly clips in my hair. I had like 6 of them in my hair and when my head hit the bench they all flew all over the place and everyone right from the front all the way to the back heard my head hit the bench and they all looked at me like I was nuts. All I did was lean on my grams and nod back out.
Anyway this is the point. The 7th day I finally was making my way home and I never in my life could comprehend how people fall asleep driving. Well I know now.
I fell asleep probably 4 or 5 times on my way to my aunts house. Which is a 20 or 30 min drive through country roads. I didnt even relize I was falling asleep I just remember opening my eyes and going head on with a car in the oncoming lane. I swerved just in time everytime thank goodness.
Well the last time this happened I was almost at my aunts house. I nodded and again woke up and was head on with a truck . swerved just in time BUT he swerved at the same time and we were head on again and he had to swerve again off the road and through a ditch..through a wore cow fence and into a pasture.
I didnt stop or anything. i just was hurrying up to get to my aunts. Well like a minute later i see the guy chasing me. And honking and trying to get next to me. Finally I stopped and he got out and said to me.. You ran me off the road back there You could have killed me...And before he could say anything else..all that came out of my mouth was " So you didnt die....AND?" And i drove off. How pathetic is that?
Come to find out he was my aunts neighbor.
Anyway..I could have very well killed someone or myself for being a dumba$$.
And my total disregard to that guy is disgusting.
Also after I finally fell asleep my grams told me how I woke up and went into the kitchen and she made me a plate ans she said I was trying to eat a rubber glove that was on the counter....I was tring to put PH strips on my potato like salt and I went and scraped my plate right on the end table in the living room.
Thats how far gone I was.

I would drink and drive 2-3 times a week for nearly 9 years. one time I even wrecked my car. I dont remeber wrecking it, my mom came into my room a few days later and asked what I did to my car!! that was scary, made me stop for a bit, but i started drinking and driving again. I got my first DUI back in janruary, scared the crap outta me!! made me stop and think again for a bit. but I started again, drinking and driving...thats why im here today, I never thought i had a problem before, after all, I only drink a few times a week. but i got drunk, and would black out, and drive. but if i can wreck my car, and not remeber it, and get a dui, and STILL drink and drive...there is a problem. I need to stop, before I kill myself, or worse, someone else and their kids.

My accident landed me in the hospital for
10 days with a high alcohol level......I knew
i had been drinking cause i left the bar at
2am....driving home in a panic and not sure
what happened after that...dont know if i
blacked out or if i was blinded by an on coming
car...or was i to0o close to the construction.
anyway,,,i had a trip in the hosital in the back
of the EMS truck and dont remember it,,,,darn....lol
I recovered in 3 months very well to only pick up a
drink again and try to end my life....
That was 16 yrs ago....
Today I am happy joyous and free... ODAAT

well ..i'm freaken glade i didn't kill anybody.
A couple more inches and her brain would had
been all over my truck..I side swipe those springler
trailer and some of it scrap the hell out of truck
and one of them hit on the side of the windshield
and rip of the side mirrors. Me and buddy and
a couple of babes going out to the homestead..lol
after a wild party and playing shot with god knows
what..the junkle juice, the beer bong and the bong, bong.
I never got a DUI...for some damn reason i passed
all the dui test or back when.. cop just stole our dope..lol
make us pour out our weed and stomp on it in front
of us and told us to go home..Before it got violent..
before the damn kids started taking guns and knifes
school or whatever...
I guess i'm an old fart..lol
when we fight back when..we freaken fought with our fist
and get stupid drunk and becomes buddies
There was a big cruzing seen when i was a teenager.
We cruz the main strip of town and park our damn cars
all ****-eye in the malls parking lot...even the damn
cops couldn't get in...lol And you can't get out even if
the cops did show up becuase it was **** eye..lol
The cops just start coming out around 2 a.m. and
cruzing lol..well They couldn't arrest a couple of thousand
kids every weekend..lol We weren't violence..we were just
having fun..there would be thousands of beer cans in the
parking lot every saturday morning...
it was right when MADD was starting.
i got so f-up once my hs gf tackle my drunk ass
during a barn fire party..to take the keys from me.
She was killed in an accident the weekend before
the prom...people would go out to the dessert
and get stupid drunk in thier sandrails..
I went into a zone from that piont. i drop out
of hs 2 weeks before graduation becuase I
couldn't cope..i later got my diploma..but
they bascially just gave it to me becuase
i already had all of the requirements and pionts.
that same year..I lost 5 hs friend in one accident
2 of them i knew really close..
My other guitar player that i use to be in a band with
got into an accident and my became paralize..
The driver was drunk out of his freanken mind
A kid haul ass in a corvett and luanch it..it killed him.
My last year of HS was really, really f-up.
I got so damn drunk..so i let my buddy drive my truck
He freaken rolled my truck on the same damn conner
the killed 5 of our friends... that was freaken nutz !!
While going to college i got so damn drunk one night
press the damn foot pedal too hard in my SS..i guess ??
I freaken took out two gas pumps..knock one way in hte
hell clear across the parking lot..and landed on the other.
I had never seen so many people move so fast..
My car cuaght on fire...luckiey i knew where the fire

If it was past 1pm and I was driving, I can almost guarantee you that I was over the alcohol limit. I drove kids, went to games, meets, appointments, shopping etc..
The last year of this totally offensive behavior, I noticed that I was beginning to make a few mistakes. I ran a stop sign and got pulled over with only a warning. I also found myself going briefly down the wrong way of a one way street in my own town in which I have lived 18 years.
I have never had any tickets or dui's. I figure I must have driven drunk way over 1000 times. I am deeply ashamed of this. It also makes me aware of what is out on these roads at any time of the day.
I thank God almost everytime when I now get into the driver's seat of a car that I didn't hurt anyone. I became sober 3 years ago when I realized what a mess my life was in. I try to keep the memory of drunk driving fresh in my mind. It is one of the many tools I use to help me avoid alcohol.

This is a cool thread. I have dealt with alot of guilt and shame I caused mysefl from drinking and driving.
5 years ago was the last time I drove a car..drunk OR sober.
I was taking some medication to help me with teh detox from heroin. Made the mistake of taking two shots of tequila . My passeger had been drinking teh whole ride. We were headed to another town in alaska and it was about a three hour drive.
I went into blackout.
I had my 4 year old in the back in a carseat.
My bronco plunged down the side of the hill rolling about 5 times until we slammed into two trees that stopped us from ending up in raging white water river.
I don't remember much actually of crash. The three of us were trapped inside the vehicle for 10 hours. It was a very remote area and nobody saw me crash. I finally .
I do remember my childs face..covered in blood.
I managed to free mysefl somehow and crawled up the side of the embankment to the road. A passerby came and help came. The side of my face was crushed and my left eye has come out of the socket.
We were airlifted from the remote area to a hospital in another town.
My son had 10 stitches to close a laceration to his forehead...my passenger came out fine but for a bruised back.
I had three surgeries on my face to reconstrust and pu my eye back.
I went to prison for the wreck charged witha felony assault on my son...he went into state custody...
I thank god every day that my son was not killed or permanently damaged. I thank god I am not doing time for MURDER. I thank god I was able to get custody of my son back and get another chance...my sons name is CHANCE..and it really fits!!
This crime changed my life forever..in every way...I still don't drive out of fear...have alot of trouble with the challenges that come along with being a felon...
All because of booze.
I just wanted to share on this thread and thank everyone who is brave enough to tell their story. It helps to know I am not alone.
