Thumbs up TOPIC: What Tools Do You Use In Recovery? Books, Tapes, Prayer, Sayings?

Hi my name is Sharon and Im an Alcoholic.

By the Grace of my HP and people like you
here in SR I havent had a drink of
alcohol since 8-11-90.

For that and you I am truely
grateful.

When we get sober we are handed
tools to use in our recovery program.

A Big Book, 12 & 12 Step Book, Daily
Reflections Book, 24 Hours a Day Book,
AA liturature, NA liturature, Recovery
Tapes, Speaker Tapes, Convention
Tapes, Ur own Personal Bible, Prayer
Book....what else?

I was handed my Big Blue AA Book
when i entered Rehab back in Aug. 90.

They also gave me a work book to help
me with my Steps and a Daily Reflection
Book and my 12 X 12 Step Book. Oh
an my little black 24 Hour Book.

I use to bring my AA book to Big
Book Studies to underline and mark
off important things to remember....
then id take my BB to my meetings
so when others quoted from it I could
make a mark to remember it....

Our books are meant to be use, studied,
carried with us....Everything in that
Book just like the Bible is the truth
and guidance to live life accordingly
and stay clean and sober....its a
guideline to living a way of life.

Look at the "oldtimers" books next time
and see the wear and tear on them....

They surely arent sitting on a self somewheres
right?

What and where r ur tools for recovery?

Thanks for letting me share.

People and service work.
Helping others always seems to give me back much more then I give others.
Just your asking questions gets me thinking and by me answering I grow and hope that what I share helps you grow as well.

Thank you Sharon

Soberrecovery

An attitude of gratitude

Diet & Exercise

Reading books about successful people

Reading books about spirituality

Always willing to learn

Reaching out to help & encourage others

Cognitive behavioral therapy(self-help book activities)

Living every day in AWE of nature and LIFE in general

Writing a daily thought journal

Planning out short term, medium term and long term goals

Lowering expectations of others and practicing tolerance

Quotes help me ALOT. I LOVE the two in my sig line

seeing myself as whole and well(visualization)

I believe that what I fight FOR strengthens me, what I fight against, weakens me. I don't always succeed at this, but really work at it.

All these things, and others have really turned my life experience around. I am SOOOO in LOVE with LIFE. No mattre how much pain or heartache, being alive ROCKS!

Shotgun approach, with Focus on meetings, service and step work. I use anything and everything that can help me stay sober, and help others achieve sobriety.

Bible,a lot of deep thinking and mostly trying to realize who i am now..because i believe we are not the same after addiction..we have changed, we are more wise and we need to learn how that fits in our new selves.... exercise and healthy eating and constant praying, not a specific prayer, but asking questions to God and talking directly to the main source!

p.s: i do like to help others..but i am in a phase of my life where i got to a point where i was helping others and not helping me, so now what i do is basically help myself to see the light and discover what i am on this land for, live my youth and yes help people when i know they deserve or for some other reason i am supposed to help them.but if there's a lesson i've learned is that the first thing is to take care of me not in a selfish way, but a self loving way...and then share my experiences and learning time, but knowing i have to protect myself first....it's a hard thing...but recovery for me is learning that i am in first place....for myself...as for any individual should do that for himself!

thanks Sharon for another great post!

Hello, Sharon: I see you have a birthday coming up here in a few months. I celebrated 13 years sobriety (not just abstinence) in April.

For me, it is meetings, some service work, working with other alc./addicts, 12x12 book, 24 Hours a Day book, and several spiritual daily reading books that are outside the 12 Step Program for maintenance of my spiritual condition, which is the central support area for my recovery now. I also am active in my church (a blessing as a result of being in the 12 Step Program and gaining a renewed enthusiasm for getting closer to God). I am a member of the Prayer Chain for church. I pray daily for around 28 people (some from AA meetings or elsewhere, most from church), which has really got me outside of myself and into God.

I believe the daily maintenance of my spiritual condition has to be constant throughout the day, so I talk to God constantly. I also study the Bible on my own and with a Bible study group that meets every Thursday night. It is a tight knit group, we really like being around each other.

Physical fitness and diet is also very important to me; it was before I got sober too. Regular cardiovascular and resistance exercise is important for many reasons, but in general it puts my mind in a much better and more positive condition, and it helps get rid of ACH and cortisol. It is more important now that I am sober.

I quit smoking about 12 years ago, that really helped too (I used the 12 Steps to help me quit).

ROCK on Sat...lol I too have to add music as
a part of my daily routine.....

When i come here i share from my heart. I
share the knowlesge and wisdome Ive collected
over the years as the result of maintanence
in my daily recovery.

I dont come here hoping many will reply to my
post or threads...however it does delight me
to see new members jump in and share their
own thoughts.....

If i share something...anything that can help
at least one person out there then ive done
my job....

I may not ever know this...I only can hope

awesome books.........oh, and would be remiss if I didn't say, even tho' I've read the 12 X 12 numerous times, I have come to learn in recent months just how incredible that book really is.

NO doubt in my mind God was working thru Bill at the time!!!
