Letting people down....

The band I'm currently playing in wants to play at a big Folk Festival....a big 4 day affair where you play multiple times....it's some months away, but I've been there before and I know there's long stretches of waiting to play and just way too many opportunities to be naughty...and no transport or outside accomodation, so I can't just show up, play, and leave...it's the whole 4 days or nothing...

so....I said I can't go, and explained exactly why.

Everyone's said they're OK with it, but I can tell they're all disappointed. I feel I did the right thing though. Doesn't stop me feeling like crap and unspeakably selfish though.

thanks. Just needed to share.

You didn't let yourself down.
Real friends will respect you for that.
And you make a fine example.

Congratulations!

No need for guilt when your priorities are straight. You are working your life instead of it working you. Way to go.

Dee you weren't selfish, you were self loving. You are doing everything you need to be happy! And you have that right! Now as for a little positive thing beyond being sober which is amazing: ( you get to prepare a lot more before the next appearance, you will rock it even more the next time!) and now you're sober so many amazing things we'll be coming your way!

Dee that is amazing. Well done on making the right decision.

Your friends WILL be proud of you too, they would rather have you around to play in all the one day gigs etc and have you miss the 4 day thing, than have you go back to your old ways and downward spiral and maybe not have you at all.

What a great choice.

Dee,

You definitely made the right decision - it might not feel good right now, but give it time. You're taking care of yourself, and I'm proud of you.

Thanks Rowan and everyone else...turns out everyone is cool with my decision after all, so I'm very gratified and humbled that I have such great mates...there, and here.

it feels good to make a right choice after so many years of bad ones!

thanks again everyone !

The choices we need to make in early sobriety are often very hard. But, you did the right thing and that's great. Having enough perspective to recognize a potential problem situation is a big step.

You know what? I want to be succinct like this. Instead I'm a wordy so-and-so who goes on and on and on.......

what Ann said.

Dee you took the right decission and have earnt the respect of your friends by doing so. You should be very proud! having the strength to face up to triggers when they arise is awsome.

Hi Dee,

You did the right thing, you can't be all there for everyone, you have to worry about you first.
