Question TOPIC: An Alcoholic Will Be An Alcoholics Till The Day They Die.

Hi, Im Sharon and Im an alcoholic.

By the Grace of my HP and people
like you here in SR, I havent had
a drink of alcohol since 8-11-90.

For that and you I am
truely grateful.

"More About Alcoholism"

"We are like men who have lost their legs; they
never grow new ones. Neither does there appear
to be any kind of treatment which will make alcoholics
of our kind like other men. We have tried every
imaginable remedy. In some instances there has been
brief recovery, followed by a still worse relapse.
Physicians who are familiar with alcoholism agree
there is no such thing as making a normal drinker out
of an alcoholic. Science may yet one day accomplish
this, but it hasn't done so yet."

I for myself have come to terms with admitting
I am an alcoholic till the day I die....Before, in
early recovery I would have thought this was
a death sentence to never be able to drink
sucessfully again.

Today some 16 yrs later, I have no reservations
about ever wanting to drink alcohol or poison
again for the remainder of my life here on Earth.

I had tried so many times before to stop on
my own....to only relapse in the worst possible
way. And where did it get me? In the hospital
via the EMS truck and a trip to rehab via the
back seat of a police car.

My recovery is an on going work in progress.
One day at a time. Following the steps and
principles set down before me to guide me
into living a more happier life without alcohol.

Do you think one day science will allow
an amputee to grow a new limb? Do
you think and Alcoholic will be able to
drink sucessfully once more?

Thanks for letting me share.

I know Sharon that in the NA Basic Text there is a statement that says "Once a Addict always an addict will not be tolerated by society anymore." The reason behind that is that we are all given a Program of Recovery that is available to all of us. We as members know the importance of the Program because many of us didn't have a choice before this. But now that we are in the Program and know that there is a different way of life, how can we expect society in itself to tolerate us when we don't want it and it meaning the Program.

Sure there are those who relapse such as myself, however today I know that using isn't right not only in my eyes but in the eyes of society. So will I always be a addict well hell yes but I don't have to live like that either that is the choice that has been a blessing to me.

With Love and Respect

Vic

Hi Sharon,

Being new in recovery the most difficult emotion I had facing was I felt I had been sentenced with this horrible disease for the rest of my life...I wanted so much to run away from the truth...I became very angry about my addictions... Acceptance was most difficult... HOWEVER,

I learned about human suffering, compassion, self love, and a strength I never was born with...

There is hope and I am grateful to be part of a wonderful group of people that are also working towards recovery...

Will science one day come up with a "CURE" for alcoholism? Well probably they will, but for now I accept the fact that I am an alcoholic and I for one will hopefully go to my grave a sober alcoholic.

If they came out tomorrow and said "We have a cure" I doubt very seriously I would be one of the people in line to get it, why? I am enjoying sobriety to much!

If they come up with a cure it will be a genetic one which means they will be able to test for it at birth and cure it then.
