Question TOPIC: What Kind Of Service Work Are You Doing To Help Others In Recovery?

Hi my name is Sharon and Im an Alcoholic.

By the Grace of my HP and people like
you here in SR I havent found it
necessary to take a drink of Alcohol
since 8-11-90.

For that and you I am truely grateful.

"Working with Others":

"Practical experience shows that nothing will so
much ensure immunity from drinking as intensive
work with other alcoholics. It works when other
activities fail. …Carry this message to other
alcoholics! You can help when no one else can.
You can secure their confidence when others fail. …

"Life will take on new meaning. To watch people
recover, to see them help others, to watch loneliness
vanish, to see a fellowship grow up about you, to have
a host of friends – this is an experience you must not miss."

That is exactly what I have been doing and continue
to do on a daily bases, to carry the message of hope
and understanding to the next person in recovery.

It is true that nothing compares to the joy and rewards
you recieve when u follow the principles of recovery
in ur every day lives and pass them on.

Besides carrying the message I use to enjoy baking
for all the meetings I attended in early recovery. It
allowed me to get out of my own miserable thinking
and put the focus on something else i nearly loved
to do....It was also a way to keep me going back
to those meetings even when i didnt want to.

What kind of service work are you doing to help
others in recovery?

Thank you for letting me share.

There are times when I feel overcommitted, so maybe I need to have myself committed! ;-) But seriously, to be of service and to give back what has been so freely given to me is an honor.

Every day I empty the trash and restock the bathrooms at my AA hall. Friday nights I'm the greeter. On Sunday I chair a BB/12&12 meeting, and once a month I chair the Birthday Night dinner & meeting. I also have three sponsees who want what I have, and of course I have this forum to help me during the day. That's an honor in itself.

Service work keeps me humble, but is so fulfilling.

I have 4 commitments (Set-up, Coffee, Coffee & Literature). I attend at least one a meeting a day. I have a sponsee of sorts even though I'm relatively new. And, of course, I come here a lot.

In the past I've been on a panel at The Goodwill, and made visits to handicapped AA members in their homes.
