Recovery Choices

Hi Everyone,

I had a revelation today about myself and I wanted to share it with everyone. My recovery can be simple or it can be complicated. It’s entirely up to me!! I can go to meetings, share, work the steps and take things one day at a time or I can stress over whether I really need to go to a meeting, refuse to share because I feel like I am so unique that noone could possibly understand, try to rush the steps or skip one or another, and worry about either my past or my future instead of just living in today.

My recovery can be based on fear, fear of relapsing, fear of tomorrow, fear of getting close to people or fear of change or else my recovery can be based on faith, faith in the program, faith in my HP, faith in myself, and faith that my life will be better given time.

Recovery is about choices. We can choose how we want to recover or even if we really want to recover at all. We can choose to either change ourselves or waste time trying to change others. We can choose surrender and acceptance or we can choose to be in control. We can choose to work a program or we can choose to drink again.

I have finally realized that my recovery is up to me. Noone can do it for me and noone can take it from me. Today I choose to be free and to live my life to the fullest. I choose to surrender in order to gain my life back. I choose to listen and to share so I can learn about my new life. I choose life instead of death.

What’s your choice today??

Thanks for listening,
Pam A

Well said, Pam.

I think it was a similar revelation that brought me to SR and to take recovery seriously for once. It's easy to gain bravado from a bottle, but bravado is a far cry from the bravery to trust that there IS a better way.

It is positive posts like yours that help to keep me strong.

Hi Pranders,

Staying in a positive state of mind is hugely important to me and often a struggle. Thanks for your post.
