Trying to stay sober today.
Hi everyone,
This is my second post here, and I have four days without a drink. I found
this forum a couple days ago, and have read a few of the threads. I'm really
struggling with wanting/not wanting a drink today. I am 47 and have drank
off & on for 30 years. I've been to AA before, many years ago, and decided
to try to do this on my own. Well, it didn't work, so here I am.
I have reservations and am expected to be at a New Years'Eve party
tonight, where everyone will be tossing back a few, so I don't know if
I'll be able to not drink. Just trying to be honest. It's really a struggle
right now, so I thought I would at least tell you where I am today.
Thank you for reading this and any replies would be very appreciated.

Yes, it's a struggle and it was for me too, a huge struggle, but you can do it. But, if I were you, I would definitely not go to the party tonight. That would be just way too hard that early on in sobriety.
SR is a great place for support and it's my lifeline, so I hope you keep posting and reading.

If you already know you can't go and stay sober than don't go. If you honesty want to quit then find something else to do tonight, do nothing if you have have to, It's not like you havn't already had 20 something drunkin NYE's. What so special about this one?
....and even if do decide to go we'll be here for you tomorrow, or if your are anything like I was you won't wanna lift your head of fhe pilllow tomorrow so we'll se ya Tuesday.

Thank you all for your rapid and supportive replies. I've decided not to go
and to stay home, after doing some shopping today. I just don't want to be
hungover again, starting the new year.
Thanks again.

Hey ClassKid,
Nice decision. This is Mike over on the other coast. I'm 46, but will be 47 in a couple of weeks. if you drink like I did you won't really miss anything tonight. It's Amateur Night anyway.
Mike in Boston
ps - post tonight

Thanks NYCGirl & Mike,
Feeling better about the decision already. Think I'll buy the fattest, juiciest
steak I can find and cook it on the grill, washed down with a coke, of course,
lol.

Hi and welcome to SR. Its great to have you. If sobriety is a really important goal for you, you will have to consider what social settings you can go to without drinking. The drinking events are quite numerous and it does take a real solid commitment to sobriety to not go to them and get drunk... drinking.

hang in there
Welcome class kid,
I too found this forum when I was on day three which was yesterday, today is day four and I am already starting to feel better so just hang in there and keep yourself healthy. It is strange how as humans we are able to reach out when we really need help and are able to find help in just knowing we are not alone in our plight, through this forum I have already realized that I am not alone here and there is another way. Other than drinking my pain away. I am in the process of locating a local AA meeting and will probably starting seeing a shrink or therapist by next week so I can deal with the real reason that I began drinking as much. Hang in there. I am.

Hello and welcome! Great job on deciding to stay home. It's hard to choose to avoid those situations, because the abuser in us always thinks it is so much more fun to party. But, wait until you wake up the next morning sober! That's what i am clinging to to make it through tonight. When I wake up ion the 1st, I will be starting the new year off fresh. Not hung over, sick, and wondering what I did the night before. No kidney pains, no dry heaves...just a cup of coffee and the joy at being able to look at the sun!

Wow, Thank you all for all the wonderful responses so quickly.
I'm hanging tough, and have the screw gun and screws ready,
in case I need to screw my feet to the floor. Not to worry
though, I'll do it where there's carpet, so it doesn't hurt as much, lol.

Hi everyone,
I made it through new years and had a great day yesterday, watching
football and enjoying the day, with no alcohol.
Thanks to all for your support and may each of you have a great
new year!

Four Days
Hi.
Joined up here a few days ago and I am on day 4 as well. In a twisted way I kind of got a boost: the flu. Interesting, I have drank in the past with flus and colds, but this particular one has made the thought nauseating. It's like curing the character in Clockwork Orange of violence by conditioning him to be nauseous when he has a violent thought. Perhaps this was an unseen helping hand.
So, how I feel without drink is skewed because of the other symptoms. Of course I don't feel "better" and am not sleeping any better. Erratic appetite.
Next challenge up: Thursday I am driving my son to Jacksonville, FL to visit an old friend (of his) for 4 days. I will be spending a lot of time alone. In the past on such trips, the bar hopping would start by mid-afternoon. Also the trips in the evening to the convenience stores to bring booze back to the motel room. I intend to do a lot of walking, sightsee, find things to do.
Come to think of it, I can recall only one 4-day period in 2006 without drink, which followed a binge, excessive even by my standards.
I wish you luck, ClassKid2007. Perhaps we can keep matching our days going without.

Hey, Joe...good to see you...sorry you're still not feeling well; but, they do say "God works in mysterious ways"...in your case, could be He showed up in the form of a flu bug.
Way to go, classkid! Hope you enjoyed your steak...we had surf & turf. May I say you are a "Class Act"!?!
