Physical reaction to sobriety
Physical reaction to sobriety
Hi. I stopped drinking 11/26/06. My habit was a bottle of wine, give or take, most days. I've noticed before when I stopped, and notice now, that the skin on one or both arms feels hot, sometimes like its burning or it itches sometimes a lot. Has aybody else experienced this? What do you do about it?
Thanks very much for any response,
Kahuna

I used to get itchy on my neck and torso and it felt like there was a heater in front of my face, but that was when I drank wine. Not everytime though. But I found that Benadryl helped really fast if I used the liquid children's formula. As far as when you quit...I'm not really sure but it does sound alot like the same symptoms. I also had blotchy red places where it itched.

Itching can be a sign of excess bile in your system, which may be because of liver problems, IIRC.
Also, there's something happening with your nervous system as you sober out. I guess maybe it's like a numb hand coming back to life.
I had terrible itching for the first month-6weeks. It's dropped considerably.

Thanks everybody
The stuff on the recovery link was very helpful as was knowing that others have had similar, though interestingly not the same, responses to early sobriety. The anti-histamine, Loratidine (Claratin), also prety much gets rid of the itches. The support provided by this site is truly great. Again, thank you all.
