Nicknames

Just something I've noticed, when people sign up here they often use names related to alcohol.

For me, because I was trying to change my behaviour away from alcohol, I chose a name that had nothing to do with alcohol. I am just wondering why people choose alcohol related names?

Secondly, I am wondering if having an alcohol related nickname may actually be a negative thing as you go through recovery?

Any thoughts?

Peace, Levi

Jersey Nonny 12-10-2006 02:12 PM

I understand what you mean, Levi; and, it beats the heck out of me. Maybe it's because they're so new they still identify more with the drinking than with sobriety.

The thing that has always bothered me is when someone refers to themselves as "a drunk" when they have been able to stay sober for a while. I certainly was a drunk; but, I'm not anymore, and don't want to still be thought of as one.

You'll notice my user name reflects my pride in being a Jerseyite. On another board, I use jerseynonny, because I like being identified as a nonny (grandmother) from New Jersey.

I guess there are those who would say, "What's in a name?" Personally, I think quite a bit.

aasharon90 12-10-2006 02:18 PM

aasharon90... nothing negative here
about my name.

I dont ever want to forget who i am
or where i came from.

Im not ashamed of the second chance
of life that AA has given me.

Im very grateful. : )

AA - Alcoholics Anonymous

Sharon- my own name

1990 - 8-11-90 the yr i got sober

Jersey Nonny 12-10-2006 02:27 PM

OOOPS! My user name here is "raerob", because I tried other combinations and they were already taken. Rae is my first name, Ro is for my middle name (Rosalee), and B is the initial of my last name.

That should do it.

hope3 12-10-2006 02:36 PM

Is the glass half empty or half full.

Dear Sharon, I'm Sharon too! Regarding your name and how new people percieve things when newly recovering.

To qoute you..... "aasharon90... nothing negative here
about my name.

I dont ever want to forget who i am
or where i came from."

The first time I came here and seen your name I was feeling pretty
negative and down. So when I saw your name, I interpreted to mean
ass sharon, even though it was aasharon. Its sad how the mind works
sometimes when we are in a funk.

Please take no offence. You have been an incredible inspiration to me, thank-you!

GlassPrisoner 12-10-2006 02:55 PM

I've used GlassPrisoner on various boards, and used it here also. It's based on a song by a progressive/metal band called Dream Theater titled "The Glass Prison". This song is actually part 1 of a unfinished work about their drummers recovery from alcoholism.

Here are the lyrics for those interested

miss communicat 12-10-2006 02:56 PM

lol~~~hope3!!!

Levi,

Veddy interesting thread!

My name has nothing to do with alcohol. Largely because I was either in total denial about being alcoholic initially, or, because I saw this forum more as a place to commuincate than anything else. Boy, did I underestimate SR!!

This forum offers so much more than anonymous online communication.

And, Miss Communicat, was also a joke...a play on words. It reflects my professional writer persona.

I'mready99 12-10-2006 03:02 PM

Thought provoking thread Levi...

On other boards I'm segram99. My first two initials and a variation of my last name. I thought coming here, segram is to close to the name of a liquor, so I changed it. Too each their own, I guess. Everbody's different in their thinking, and nothing wrong with that...

:)

One day at a time.

Steve

Umm, my brain was too bogged down when I first found SR to put in a whole lot of thought. So I went with the logical choice for me...Juliee because Julie was already taken! It's all I could muster at the time.

aasharon90 12-10-2006 04:03 PM

leviathon 12-10-2006 08:00 PM

I've just noticed the various names, some have nothing to do with booze, others have everything to do with booze. I appreciate everyone's feedback.

For me, Leviathon is actually leviathan misspelled on purpose. The leviathan is a giant sea creature that is pursued by this relentless hero in the bible. My struggles to be me have often been huge and I have frequently been pursuing relentlessly my dreams so it seemed to fit.

Peace, Levi

chicago 12-10-2006 08:52 PM

my name is pretty self explanatory. i take great pride in being from Chicago. to me its the greatest city. Incredible skyline. 10,000,000 people in the chicagoloand area but the perfect medium between being too condensed and too spread out. beautiful neighborhoods. Rich in culture. Birthplace of House music. and of course Deep Dish PIZZA!!

oh yeah and 4000 meetings a week.

scootinbabe 12-10-2006 09:07 PM

hmmmm...take a guess about my "handle"
(i guess it could have been vespa girl or something similar)

no boozing just cruising on my nickname!

Steve58 12-11-2006 01:19 PM

This was interesting, I'm not all that creative, so I kept it simple with name and birth year.

Levi, I always wondered, just had not gotten 'round to asking you yet.
GP-Thanks for the song, heavy stuff, thats for sure!

Sharon, I'm quite sure you can, cause I know someone who did, but I dont know how much of your old identity you keep.

Take care, all!
S

NoelleR 12-12-2006 09:11 AM

Good question and lotsa good answers....for me I focused on:

"I am wondering if having an alcohol related nickname may actually be a negative thing as you go through recovery?"

Here's a thought------

Before his name was Abraham (father of many nations have I made thee), he was called Abram (father of height; father of exaltation; exalted father); and

Before her name was Sarah (princess; noble woman; noble lady), she was called Sarai (bitter; contentious; dominative; quarrelsome) ..... (o:

Just something to think about.....

c'est la vie 12-12-2006 10:54 AM

Interesting story behind your name Levi. I didn't think too hard when I came up with my name when I joined - it was winelover!! How's that for not looking for recovery (which I really wasn't at the time, just looking to slow down, LOL!)

Four months and lots of struggling later, I decided to "put down my shovel" and really get serious. I live in france so it I thought it would be fun for me to use a French phrase that people would understand. I think most people have heard the phrase "c'est la vie" even if they don't know exactly what it means.

I'm an alcoholic. I can't drink safely. It makes me sad sometimes, but hey that's life, c'est la vie (that's life) and I accept that.

So my answers to a few of the questions posed.
Yes, I do think it's better to have a positive knickname to keep your mind thinking positive thoughts. Winelover = BAD knickname

Yes, you can change your name without starting over. Just e-mail a mod with the request. Then the trick becomes letting all your friends here know who you are.

Jersey Nonny 12-12-2006 03:22 PM

I didn't think too hard when I came up with my name when I joined - it was winelover!!
Ah, yes...I knew her when...happy to say, I know her now!

barb dwyer 12-12-2006 10:19 PM

barb dwyer = barbed wire

trust me - when i'm drinking ... or it's PMS week ... it fits.

tink360 12-13-2006 01:33 AM

I believe the name I chose was Tink360. Unfortunately that has everything to do with my drug of choice.

I was a drug dealer and a group of friends starting calling me tink because I was selling my "fairy dust"

And the 360 is a number "tweakers" use for meth I guess. I dont know for sure, I just know we always used the number. So my name for everything became tink360.

I still use the nickname Tink. Its been my nickname for years now. It was suggested to me to lose it, but I like it. It doesnt effect me in my recovery and I do just fine with it. I actually really do like Tinkerbell. ha ha. I dont think my nickname is going to cause me to relapse. ha ha.

But, Yes, when I first joined sr like a year ago, I was still using and that was the name that came up.

leviathon 12-13-2006 07:04 AM

I am not suggesting that anyone is going to relapse because of their nickname. I just noted the various names that did and did not involve booze or drug associations. I wondered why people chose the ones that were associated with what they were trying to quit.

I like the fact that c'est la vie is winelover no more. I knew her when and I really like her new name much better. Good progress C'est La Vie.

Peace, Levi
