Question mainly for UK members (but all members really)

Hi, my last drink was end June this year.
Someone at work has now recommended I consult my GP about it (I am in UK).
I have never been asked after my drinking or not drinking by my GP since I mentioned to him two years ago that I had been drinking and wondered whether he could refer me for "treatment". He said he couldn't because I had already detoxed in a basic way (it was probably over a week after my drink on that occasion). Friends say it is unreasonable to expect a doctor to ask after your condition if you have mentioned it before.
So my question is, what now might I expect from my GP on this?
Regards,

Welcome to SR!
 Way to go on your sober time!

As I am now a non drinker..as are you
my doctor and I have no reason to discuss drinking.

Glad to see a new member..

By "treatment", do you mean you want to go for rehabilitation (either out-patient or to a center)? I wouldn't know what facilities are available in the UK, although we have many in The States. But, many people are able to stay sober (after the initial detoxification from the alcohol) by attending regular meetings of AA and following the suggested program of recovery.

So my question is, what now might I expect from my GP on this?
Unless you have physical ailments...either directly or indirectly related to your alcoholism...there really isn't anything your GP needs to do. However, it is your responsibility to make sure no professional prescribes any meds that might compromise your sobriety.

It is always prudent to let your attending medical professionals know that you are a recovering alcoholic. If they have any knowledge of alcoholism, they will be careful with the prescriptions.
